The single most common complaint about a homemade candle is that it does not smell like much. Almost every time, the cause is one of four things, and three of them are free to fix. That is the useful thing to know before you buy a more expensive fragrance oil.
The four levers, in the order to try them

Work down that list in order. Almost nobody does, and almost everybody buys a different fragrance oil first, which is the one change that costs money and is least likely to be the problem.
Cold throw and hot throw are different things
Cold throw is how the candle smells unlit, in the jar. Hot throw is how it scents a room while burning. They are not correlated the way people assume, and soy in particular tends to have a modest cold throw and a much better hot throw.
That means the jar-sniff test is misleading. A soy candle that smells faint on the shelf can perfectly well fill a room, and a candle with a strong cold throw can disappoint when lit if the wick cannot make a full melt pool.

What that means
Named scents matter more than they look. Kit fragrance oils are usually unlabeled, so when one of your candles turns out well you have no way to make it again.
The listing does not publish a recommended fragrance load, so use the wax maker's figure instead. Golden Wax 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum, and most makers land between 6 and 8 percent.
Forest Pine and Harvest Spice are the two that hold up at a high load. Vanilla in soy tends to discolor the wax to a cream over a few weeks, which is a cosmetic issue rather than a fault.

What that means
Four ounces of fragrance at an 8 percent load scents about 50 ounces of wax, which is roughly six 8-ounce candles. A sampler bottle does not get you a batch; this does.
Woody-amber fragrances are the most forgiving family in wax. They carry through the cure, they survive a high pour temperature, and they do not discolor soy the way vanilla does.

What that means
P&J publish these as multi-purpose oils, meaning they are formulated to work in candles, soap and diffusers. That breadth is convenient and it is also a compromise: a candle-specific oil is usually formulated for a higher flash point.
Fragrance oil and essential oil are not interchangeable in a candle. Essential oils are volatile and mostly burn off before they scent a room, which is why almost every candle on a shop shelf uses fragrance oil.

Fragrance oil, not essential oil
Essential oils are volatile plant distillates. In a diffuser that volatility is the point; in a candle it means most of the aromatic compounds leave before they scent a room. Almost every commercial candle uses fragrance oil, and that is not a corner being cut. Common questions
How much fragrance oil should I use in a candle?
Golden Wax 464 publishes a maximum of 10 percent by weight and suggests 1 to 2 ounces per pound of wax, which is 6 to 12 percent. Most makers work at 6 to 8 percent.
Why does my candle smell weak?
In order of likelihood: the load is too low, the oil was added too cool, the candle has not cured long enough, or the wick is too small to make a full melt pool. All but the last are free to fix.
How long before a candle smells right?
One to two weeks for soy. The candle is safe to burn much sooner, but the fragrance binds into the wax over that period and a two-day-old candle will smell noticeably weaker.
Can I use essential oils in candles?
You can, but expect a weaker throw. Essential oils are volatile and most of the aromatic compounds leave before they scent a room. The heavier oils - patchouli, cedarwood, clove - work better than citrus.
What temperature do I add fragrance oil at?
For Golden Wax 464, the published figure is 170F. Adding it much cooler means it does not fully bind into the wax; adding it much hotter risks flashing off the lighter notes.
