What that means
Two pounds is 32 ounces of wax. At the 0.8 fill factor soy runs at, that is roughly ten 4-ounce candles or five 8-ounce candles, before you account for what stays in the pot.
When we first wrote this up, one kit in seven published a wax weight. Re-checking the listings on 2026-09-21, four of the seven now do. Being able to do that arithmetic in advance is still worth more than an extra bottle of unnamed fragrance oil.
The two centering devices matter more than they sound. Kits almost always ship wick stickers and no holders, and an off-center wick is the most common cosmetic failure in a first batch - this is the only kit here that includes both.
A published pot capacity of 32 oz is a genuinely useful figure: it tells you the kit melts its entire 2 lb of wax in one go rather than in two batches at different temperatures.

A hot plate turns a kit from a bag of ingredients into a working setup. Without one you are melting wax in a pan of water on the stove, which works, but adds a step and a temperature you cannot read.

Wick stickers are the small thing that ruins a first pour when they are missing. They are what holds the wick tab to the bottom of the jar while the wax sets; without them the wick lifts and floats off-center.

The arithmetic nobody prints
Here is what a published wax weight buys you. Take the one kit that gives us the number and cost it out against buying the same components separately.
Compare that with a 5 lb bag of Golden Wax 464 on its own, which is 80 ounces, or roughly twelve 8-ounce candles. The kit is not a bad deal, but you can only know that because the wax weight is published. For every other kit here, that comparison is impossible.
The one we would skip, and why
The ZEROMX kit with molds is ranked last and we would not buy it as a first kit. It is not a bad product. It is the wrong product for the person reading this page.
Molded candles need a pillar-grade wax, which sets harder and higher because nothing is holding the sides up. The listing does not state which wax is in the box. If it is a container soy, and container soy is what almost every kit ships, the molded shapes will be soft and will slump in a warm room. That is a wax problem the buyer will read as their own failure.
What every one of these kits will not do
None of them will give you the right wick for every container in the box. Kits ship one wick size, and the published charts put a 4-ounce tin and an 8-ounce jar three to four sizes apart. That is not a defect in any particular kit; it is a limit of the format.
Expect your first tin to burn hot and your first large jar to tunnel, or the reverse. Then measure your jars and buy wicks sized to them. That second purchase, about the cost of two coffees, does more for your candles than any upgrade to the kit itself.
What to add on day one
- A thermometer, if the kit has no digital display. The published GW 464 instructions specify fragrance at 170F and pour at 140F, and you cannot hit those by eye. See equipment list.
