Molded candles rather than container candles

Every kit in this category shows you a flat-lay photograph of jars, bottles and bags. Almost none of them tell you how much wax is in the bag. That single omission is what this ranking is built around, because it is the difference between a purchase you can evaluate and one you have to take on faith.

How we picked

We have not made candles with any of these kits and we are not going to say we have. What we did instead: read every listing's published contents, ranked them on the components that actually determine whether a first pour succeeds, and did the wax-to-container arithmetic wherever a listing gave us enough numbers to do it.

  1. Published wax weight. The only figure that lets you compute cost per candle. Exactly one kit here has it.
  2. Heat source in the box. The component beginners most often discover they are missing.
  3. Wick stickers included. Cheap, tiny, and the reason a first candle has a wick stuck to the side of the jar.
  4. Glass over tins. You learn faster when you can see the melt pool form.
  5. Named fragrance oils. Unnamed oils cannot be re-ordered, which caps the kit at one good result.

The full method is on how we pick. We also publish the live price for each kit where Amazon gives us one, and say plainly when it does not.

SAEUYVB Candle Making Kit with 2 lbs Soy Wax, Melting Pot and Hot Plate product photo

Top pick · The only kit that publishes its wax weight

SAEUYVB Candle Making Kit with 2 lbs Soy Wax, Melting Pot and Hot Plate

SAEUYVB

Two pounds of soy wax, stated on the listing. That one published number is why this kit is here: it is the only box in this category where you can work out your cost per candle before you spend anything.

Published specifications

Positioning
DIY candle making supplies for adult beginnersSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02

What that means

Two pounds is 32 ounces of wax. At the 0.8 fill factor soy runs at, that is roughly eight 4-ounce candles or four 8-ounce candles, before you account for what stays in the pot.

Every other kit in this roundup hides its wax weight. Being able to do that arithmetic in advance is worth more than an extra bottle of unnamed fragrance oil.

Good

  • Publishes the wax weight, so cost per candle is computable before purchase
  • Melting pot and hot plate both included
  • Soy flakes, which melt faster than a block

Less good

  • Fewer decorative extras than the gift-framed kits
  • Fragrance oils are unnamed, so they cannot be re-ordered

Skip this one if

You are buying a present and want it to look like one out of the box. This kit is the practical choice, not the pretty one.

FAIRYELF Soy Candle Making Kit with Hot Plate product photo

Pick 2 · A first pour with nothing else to buy

FAIRYELF Soy Candle Making Kit with Hot Plate

FAIRYELF

The heat source is the part beginners under-budget, and this box includes one. That single decision is what separates a kit you can use tonight from a kit that sends you back to the store for a double boiler.

Wax quantity
Not published on the listing

What that means

A hot plate turns a kit from a bag of ingredients into a working setup. Without one you are melting wax in a pan of water on the stove, which works, but adds a step and a temperature you cannot read.

The dyes and dried flowers are the part that makes this read as a gift box rather than a supply order. That is the point if you are buying it for someone in December, and beside the point if you are buying for yourself.

The listing does not state how much wax is in the box. Assume one to two pours, not a stock of it.

Good

  • Heat source in the box, so nothing else is required on day one
  • Containers, wicks, fragrance and dye all included
  • Presents as a gift without extra packaging

Less good

  • Wax quantity is not published, so you cannot compute cost per candle before buying
  • Included fragrance oils are unnamed, which makes them impossible to re-order by name

Skip this one if

You already own a pouring pot or a double boiler. You would be paying for a hot plate you do not need, and buying wax and wicks separately gets you more of both.

WITOROR Candle Making Kit with Digital Wax Melt Warmer product photo

Pick 3 · Reading the wax temperature without a separate thermometer

WITOROR Candle Making Kit with Digital Wax Melt Warmer

WITOROR

A digital warmer means the temperature is a number on a display rather than a guess. For a beginner that removes the single biggest cause of a bad first candle: adding fragrance to wax that is too hot or too cool.

Temperature range
Not published on the listing

What that means

Golden Wax 464's published instructions call for adding fragrance at 170F and pouring at 140F. Hitting those numbers requires reading the wax, and a digital warmer reads it for you.

The listing does not publish the warmer's temperature range or accuracy, so treat the display as a guide and add a clip thermometer if you start selling.

Good

  • Digital temperature display removes the main beginner failure mode
  • Complete kit, so nothing else needed on day one

Less good

  • Warmer accuracy and range are not published
  • Digital warmers cost more than a pouring pot, and the pot lasts longer

Skip this one if

You are buying one kit as a one-off holiday activity. A hot plate kit does the same job for less, and the digital display is wasted on a single pour.

Complete Candle Making Kit with Wax Melter, Soy Wax, Scents, Dyes and Tins product photo

Pick 4 · The widest published contents list

Complete Candle Making Kit with Wax Melter, Soy Wax, Scents, Dyes and Tins

Generic (Amazon listing)

This is the box that publishes the longest inventory of what is actually inside: wax, melter, scents, dyes, wicks, wick stickers and tins. When kits refuse to tell you what is in them, one that does is worth something.

Candle tinsSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
Also includes
Scents, dyes, wicks, wick stickersSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02

What that means

Wick stickers are the small thing that ruins a first pour when they are missing. They are what holds the wick tab to the bottom of the jar while the wax sets; without them the wick lifts and floats off-center.

Tins rather than glass means you cannot watch the melt pool form. That is a real loss when you are learning what a full melt pool looks like, and it is why we would take a glass-jar kit first.

Good

  • Publishes an itemized contents list, which most kits do not
  • Wick stickers included, so the first pour does not fail on a missing accessory
  • Melter included

Less good

  • Tins hide the melt pool, which is the single most useful thing to watch on a first candle
  • Unbranded, so the wax grade is unknown

Skip this one if

You want to see what the wax is doing while it burns. Buy a kit with glass jars, or buy jars separately.

SAEUYVB Candle Making Kit for Adults with Hot Plate product photo

Pick 5 · A gift that looks like a gift

SAEUYVB Candle Making Kit for Adults with Hot Plate

SAEUYVB

The same complete-setup logic as the FAIRYELF box in a darker, plainer presentation. If you are buying this for someone who would rather receive a workshop than a craft project, this is the one.

Wax quantity
Not published on the listing

What that means

Functionally this sits alongside the FAIRYELF kit: soy wax, containers, wicks, fragrance, and a hot plate so you are not improvising a heat source.

SAEUYVB list several near-identical kits at different bundle sizes. Read the specific listing you are on rather than assuming the contents from the brand name.

Good

  • Heat source included
  • Restrained presentation
  • Soy wax, so the pour temperatures are forgiving

Less good

  • The brand lists several similar kits, which makes comparing them by name unreliable
  • Wax quantity is not published

Skip this one if

You want to know exactly how many candles you can make before you order. None of these boxes publish a wax weight, and that is a real limitation.

DOPXXBB Complete Candle Making Kit with Cups, Tins and Wicks product photo

Pick 6 · Volume of containers per box

DOPXXBB Complete Candle Making Kit with Cups, Tins and Wicks

DOPXXBB

Heavier on containers than most starter boxes, which matters more than it sounds: your first batch is where you learn, and you learn faster with six small candles than with two large ones.

Heat source
Not published on the listing

What that means

More containers means more attempts at the same fragrance load and pour temperature, which is how you actually learn the craft rather than reading about it.

The listing does not confirm a heat source. Check the current contents list before ordering if you do not already own a pouring pot.

Good

  • Container count is the strong point
  • Soy wax
  • Cups and tins both included

Less good

  • No published heat source, so you may still need a pouring pot
  • No published wax weight

Skip this one if

You have no way to melt wax yet. Confirm the heat source before ordering, or take one of the hot-plate kits instead.

ZEROMX Candle Making Kit with Digital Wax Melting Pot and Molds product photo

Pick 7 · Molded candles rather than container candles

ZEROMX Candle Making Kit with Digital Wax Melting Pot and Molds

ZEROMX

The only kit here that ships molds and gift boxes, which puts it in a different category: this is for shaped, unmoulded candles you hand over, not jar candles you burn at home.

Published specifications

Positioning
Complete DIY set for home decor and gift givingSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
Wax type
Not published on the listing

What that means

Molded candles need a harder wax than container candles do, because nothing is holding the sides up. Container soy is the wrong wax for a mold, and the listing does not say which wax is in the box.

If the included wax is a container soy, expect the molded shapes to be soft and to slump in a warm room. That is a wax problem, not a technique problem.

Good

  • Molds and gift boxes included
  • Digital melting pot
  • Different output from every other kit here

Less good

  • Wax type is not published, and mold candles are wax-critical
  • Molded candles are a harder first project than jar candles

Skip this one if

This is your first ever pour. Start with containers: the jar holds the shape while you learn everything else. Molds add a variable you do not need yet.

The arithmetic nobody prints

Here is what a published wax weight buys you. Take the one kit that gives us the number and cost it out against buying the same components separately.

Compare that with a 5 lb bag of Golden Wax 464 on its own, which is 80 ounces, or roughly twelve 8-ounce candles. The kit is not a bad deal, but you can only know that because the wax weight is published. For every other kit here, that comparison is impossible.

The one we would skip, and why

The ZEROMX kit with molds is ranked last and we would not buy it as a first kit. It is not a bad product. It is the wrong product for the person reading this page.

Molded candles need a pillar-grade wax, which sets harder and higher because nothing is holding the sides up. The listing does not state which wax is in the box. If it is a container soy, and container soy is what almost every kit ships, the molded shapes will be soft and will slump in a warm room. That is a wax problem the buyer will read as their own failure.

What every one of these kits will not do

None of them will give you the right wick for every container in the box. Kits ship one wick size, and the published charts put a 4-ounce tin and an 8-ounce jar three to four sizes apart. That is not a defect in any particular kit; it is a limit of the format.

Expect your first tin to burn hot and your first large jar to tunnel, or the reverse. Then measure your jars and buy wicks sized to them. That second purchase, about the cost of two coffees, does more for your candles than any upgrade to the kit itself.

What to add on day one

  • A thermometer, if the kit has no digital display. The published GW 464 instructions specify fragrance at 170F and pour at 140F, and you cannot hit those by eye. See equipment list.
  • Wick centering devices. Kits ship stickers, rarely holders. A wick holder and sticker pack is a few dollars.
  • Two wick sizes for your actual jars, once you have measured them.

That is roughly the price of a second kit and it upgrades the first one substantially. If you would rather skip the kit entirely, kit vs buying separately has the full comparison.

How these picks were made. Published specifications compiled from the sources listed below, the arithmetic shown on the page, and live Amazon prices. No product here has been burned by us. Read the method.

Common questions

What is the best candle making kit for beginners?

The SAEUYVB kit with 2 lbs of soy wax, a melting pot and a hot plate, because it is the only kit in this category that publishes its wax weight. That single figure is what lets you work out how many candles it makes and what each one costs.

What do you need to start making candles?

Wax, a wick sized to your container, a container, a heat source, wick stickers and something to read the temperature with. Fragrance oil and dye are optional on a first candle and are worth leaving out until the pour itself works.

Is soy or paraffin better for a beginner kit?

Soy. It melts at a lower temperature, is more forgiving about pour temperature, and is what almost every kit ships. Paraffin throws scent harder but is less tolerant of a beginner's temperature control.

How much does it cost to make a candle at home?

It depends entirely on your wax and container, and it is arithmetic you can do: wax weight per candle is container capacity in fluid ounces times 0.8. From there, cost per candle is that fraction of your wax cost, plus the jar, the wick and the fragrance at your chosen load.

Do candle making kits include everything?

Most include wax, containers, wicks and fragrance. Many include a heat source. Almost none include a thermometer or wick centering devices, and almost none publish how much wax is in the box.

What is the best kit for a gift?

One with a heat source, so the recipient can use it the day they open it, and glass containers rather than tins, because glass photographs and gifts better. The FAIRYELF and SAEUYVB hot plate kits both qualify.
