Before the picks, the uncomfortable part: fragrance oil brand is not the main variable in scent throw. Load, addition temperature, cure time and melt pool size all matter more, and all four are documented. If your candles throw weakly at a 4 percent load after two days of curing, no bottle on this page will fix that.
Where the oil does matter is the fragrance family, and that is predictable from chemistry rather than opinion.
Why some families throw and others do not
Perfumery sorts aromatic compounds into top, middle and base notes by volatility: how readily they evaporate. Top notes are the most volatile, which is why they are the first thing you smell and the first thing to disappear.
A candle is a slow, warm evaporation process running for hours. That systematically favors the less volatile compounds. Base notes - woods, ambers, musks, vanillins - survive the pour, survive the cure, and are still there at hour four. Top notes, which is most of what makes citrus smell like citrus, have largely left.

What that means
Vanillin oxidizes and browns the wax around it. In a white soy candle this shows as a cream or tan tint over a few weeks. It is not a fault and it does not affect the burn.
If the discoloration bothers you, dye the candle a color that hides it, or accept it. There is no additive that reliably prevents it in a home setup.

What that means
Named scents matter more than they look. Kit fragrance oils are usually unlabeled, so when one of your candles turns out well you have no way to make it again.
The listing does not publish a recommended fragrance load, so use the wax maker's figure instead. Golden Wax 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum, and most makers land between 6 and 8 percent.
Forest Pine and Harvest Spice are the two that hold up at a high load. Vanilla in soy tends to discolor the wax to a cream over a few weeks, which is a cosmetic issue rather than a fault.

What that means
P&J publish these as multi-purpose oils, meaning they are formulated to work in candles, soap and diffusers. That breadth is convenient and it is also a compromise: a candle-specific oil is usually formulated for a higher flash point.
Fragrance oil and essential oil are not interchangeable in a candle. Essential oils are volatile and mostly burn off before they scent a room, which is why almost every candle on a shop shelf uses fragrance oil.

What that means
Coconut wax has a lower melt point than soy, which is part of why it releases fragrance more readily. It is also why coconut candles slump in a warm room more easily.
Because the melt point sits lower, the wick that was right in soy is often too large in coconut blend. Re-test the wick when you change wax family; do not carry it over.

This is your first wax. Coconut blend rewards someone who already knows what a correct melt pool looks like, and punishes someone who does not.
The load that makes it work
The wax lever
Once load, temperature and cure are optimized, the next real gain is a different wax. Coconut soy blends release fragrance more readily than straight soy because their melt point is lower, so the pool forms faster and the fragrance volatilizes sooner.
That is why a coconut blend appears in the picks above alongside the oils. It is a fragrance decision as much as a wax decision. The trade is a softer candle and a wick that has to be retested - see soy vs coconut wax.
The lever people forget
Fragrance is released from the melt pool. A wick too small for the container makes a small pool, and a small pool releases less fragrance no matter how much oil is in the wax.
If your candle has an unmelted ring around the edge, that is the problem, and it is a wick problem, not a fragrance problem. Fixing it usually produces a bigger improvement in throw than any oil change.
The full order of operations
- Check the melt pool reaches the glass. If not, size the wick up.
- Raise the load toward the wax's published maximum.
- Add the oil at the published temperature, 170F for GW 464, and stir for a full two minutes.
- Cure for two weeks, not two days. See cure time.
- Choose a base-note fragrance family.
- Only then, try a coconut soy blend.

Common questions
How do I make my candles smell stronger?
Check the melt pool reaches the glass, raise the fragrance load toward the wax's published maximum, add the oil at the published temperature, cure for two weeks, and choose a woody or gourmand fragrance. Only then consider a different wax.
What fragrance oils have the best hot throw?
Woody, amber, musk and gourmand scents, because their aromatic compounds are the least volatile and survive the pour, the cure and hours of burning. Citrus is the weakest.
Can I add more fragrance oil than the maximum?
No. Wax holds a finite amount in solution; past that the surplus separates out, leaves an oily film, and adds a flammable liquid to the candle. Golden Wax 464 publishes 10 percent as its maximum.
Does more expensive fragrance oil throw better?
Not reliably. Family and load matter far more than price. A well-loaded, well-cured candle with an inexpensive woody fragrance will out-throw an under-loaded candle with a costly citrus one.
Why is my hot throw weak but cold throw strong?
Usually the melt pool. A candle can smell strong in the jar and throw weakly if the wick is too small to melt the surface fully. Check that the pool reaches the glass within four hours.
