The scent most people picture when they say natural candle

Lavender is the second scent most people reach for after vanilla, and it is the only popular candle scent where the essential-oil-or-fragrance-oil question is genuinely live. Vanilla essential oil is barely a real product, which best vanilla fragrance oils for candles goes into. Lavender essential oil is sold everywhere, by the gallon, and it is cheaper per ounce than the fragrance oils.

So this page does two jobs: rank the lavenders you can actually buy, and settle which type to buy using what the listings publish rather than what the category believes.

How we judged these

Nobody here has burned a lavender candle for this page and no amount of burning would settle it, because scent is not a measurement. What can be assessed is the listing. Five criteria, in the order they decide a purchase.

  1. Is the volume published. Without it you cannot work out cost per candle, cost per ounce, or how many jars the bottle fills. One listing on this page does not state it anywhere in its bullets.
  2. Does the listing name candle making, and ideally the wax. An oil sold for diffusers may be fine in wax; an oil sold for wax has at least been aimed at it.
  3. Composition claims you can check: phthalate-free, paraben-free, vegan, origin, skin safety when diluted.
  4. Scent detail. Lavender varies more than any other common candle scent, from sharp and camphorous to soft and sweet. One listing describes which end it sits at. Most say floral and stop.
  5. Anything usable about wax behavior: a load, a flash point, a discoloration note. Nothing here publishes any of the three, and that is the finding rather than an omission on our part.

What that means

Eight fluid ounces is about 237 milliliters, so this one bottle holds more than two of the 100 ml singles. At a 6 percent load it scents roughly 24 eight-ounce candles, which is a season of gifts rather than a test.

The scent description is the most useful sentence in this category. Less camphor is the specific thing people dislike about cheap lavender, and a seller willing to name it is telling you what the oil is not.

The same oil is also sold in a 4-ounce bottle with identical bullets. Check both before ordering, because the larger bottle is usually the better value per ounce and occasionally is not.

Good

  • Largest fragrance oil volume here by a wide margin
  • Most specific published scent description on this page
  • Phthalate-free and US manufacture stated

Less good

  • No flash point, no load guidance and no discoloration note
  • One bullet claims the fragrance is safe on skin without harmful chemicals, which is marketing rather than a specification
  • Sold primarily as an aromatherapy oil, so the candle guidance is thin

What that means

A published volume is what makes this bottle comparable to anything else. One hundred milliliters at a 6 percent load is roughly ten 8-ounce candles, and you can do that arithmetic because the number is on the listing.

The flash point reads Flash Points greater than 389, with nothing after the number. That is the fifth different figure we have recorded across this seller's range, which now reads 200, 217, 389, 451 and 761 depending on the bottle. We treat the whole set as unpublished and work from the wax maker's fragrance temperature instead.

Amber glass with a euro dropper is the right bottle for a floral. Lavender is a middle note and the dropper is how you add it drop by drop when you are blending it with a base note to hold it down.

Good

  • Published volume, so cost per candle is computable
  • Phthalate-free, cruelty-free and US manufacture all stated
  • Amber glass with a dropper cap

Less good

  • Flash point figure is printed without a unit and contradicts the rest of the range
  • No recommended load, so use the wax maker's maximum
  • Single scent, so there is nothing to sample against

What that means

Naming cold process soap and candle jars separately is a supplier that knows the two behave differently. Most listings on this page name a dozen crafts in one bullet and tell you nothing about any of them.

The missing volume is a real problem rather than a quibble. Without a size you cannot work out cost per candle, cost per ounce, or how many jars the bottle fills, and this is the one listing here that withholds it.

Excellent scent throw is the seller's claim, not a measurement. Nobody publishes a throw figure because there is no standard test for it, so read it as a statement of intent and cure the candle properly before judging.

Good

  • From a supplier that distinguishes candle use from soap use
  • Vegan, paraben-free and phthalate-free all stated
  • Describes the scent profile rather than listing every craft

Less good

  • Bottle size is absent from the listing bullets, so value cannot be computed
  • No flash point and no recommended load
  • Throw claim has no measurement behind it

What that means

Four fluid ounces is 118 milliliters and the part number says 120 ml, which is the same bottle described two ways rather than a discrepancy worth worrying about. It is still the kind of thing to check against the photograph.

Naming soy candles in the title matters more than it looks. Soy takes fragrance at a published 170F for GW 464 and holds a published 10 percent maximum, and an oil sold into that use case is at least being marketed at the right wax.

The scent itself is barely described. The final bullet says luxurious and lists three other crafts, which is the opposite of the Plant Guru listing's approach.

Good

  • Sold explicitly for soy candle making
  • Vegan, phthalate-free, paraben-free and US manufacture stated
  • Mid-size bottle, between a sampler and a bulk buy

Less good

  • No published scent profile beyond the word luxurious
  • No flash point and no recommended load
  • Highest price per ounce of the fragrance oils with a published volume

What that means

Sixteen ounces is twice the largest fragrance oil here and it costs less than some of the 4-ounce bottles. If lavender is the scent you make most, that arithmetic is hard to argue with.

Therapeutic grade appears in the title with no standards body behind it, and the listing names none. There is no certification being referenced, so read it as a marketing phrase.

One bullet recommends infusing your cleaning solutions with a minty scent, on a lavender listing. Another stacks winter essential oils for candle making into a sentence that does not parse. The volume and the bottle are real; the copy is keyword filler.

Good

  • By far the lowest cost per ounce on this page
  • Amber glass, which matters for an essential oil
  • Names candle making and soap making as intended uses

Less good

  • Therapeutic grade is an unbacked claim with no certifying body named
  • Listing copy is keyword filler and describes a minty scent on a lavender product
  • No flash point, no load, no distillation or origin detail

You want the scent to carry a room. Essential oil lavender fades in wax faster than any fragrance oil on this page, and sixteen ounces of a scent that disappears is a bigger mistake than four.

What that means

Lavender is a middle note, which is why it fares better in a candle than citrus and worse than peppermint. Expect a candle that is noticeable in the room it is in and not in the next one.

The published blending list is genuinely useful: cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver are all base notes, and blending one of those into lavender is the standard fix for an essential oil candle that fades.

This is the listing to read if you want to know what a manufacturer thinks these oils are for, because it is the only one here that says candles out loud.

Good

  • Names candle making as an intended use, which the others do not
  • Publishes a blending list, including the base notes that anchor a candle
  • Four ounces at a workable price per ounce

Less good

  • No published flash point and no published load
  • Softer in wax than the diffuser experience people are expecting
  • Needs a base note blended in to hold through a long burn

Skip this one if

You want the candle to smell exactly like the bottle. Lavender loses more of itself in wax than almost any fragrance oil does.

Fragrance oil or essential oil, for lavender specifically

The general case is argued on fragrance oil vs essential oil. Lavender is the interesting exception because both products exist at scale, both name candle making on the listing, and the essential oil is cheaper per ounce. Here is what the published data actually supports.

  • Throw favors the fragrance oil, and nothing published on any of these listings contradicts that. Lavender is a middle note that loses more of itself in wax than a fragrance oil does, which is the conclusion best essential oils for candles reached across the whole essential oil category.
  • Cost per ounce favors the essential oil heavily. A 16-ounce essential oil here costs less than some 4-ounce fragrance oils. That stops being a saving if the candle does not smell of anything.
  • Documentation favors the fragrance oils. Three of four publish composition claims. The essential oils publish a grade claim with no certifying body and a list of blending partners.
  • Nobody publishes what you most need: a recommended load for wax. Not one listing on this page gives one, essential or fragrance.

How much lavender oil, and how far a bottle goes

How much fragrance oil per pound runs this for every common jar size, and if the finished candle still smells of nothing, how to increase scent throw works through the four levers in order of what they cost.

Lavender is not one smell

This is the part the listings mostly skip. Lavender runs from sharp and medicinal to soft and almost sweet, and the difference is camphor. A high-camphor lavender in a candle reads as clean in a good way and as a hospital in a bad one.

Exactly one listing on this page tells you where its oil sits: the Plant Guru fragrance oil describes itself as fruitier and mellower with less camphor than a standard lavender. Whether or not you want that, it is the only one giving you the information. Every other listing says floral, calming or luxurious, which describes the category rather than the bottle.

Will lavender discolor the wax

None of these six listings publishes a discoloration note either way, so we are not going to tell you what will happen. What we can say is that the oils with a documented discoloration problem are the vanillin-heavy ones, and that is published by the supplier itself on the vanilla page rather than inferred.

Pour one tealight before you pour twelve jars. Half an ounce of wax answers the question for your oil and your wax in a week, and best tealight cups covers the cups for exactly that kind of test.

Cure it before you judge it

Lavender is a middle note, which means it settles faster than vanilla and slower than citrus. A lavender candle judged at day two is being judged early; candle cure time has the published guidance by wax, and why my candle has no scent covers the other reasons a cured candle still underperforms.

The honest verdict

The Plant Guru 8-ounce fragrance oil is the pick, on two things no competitor manages together: the largest published volume of any fragrance oil here and the only description that tells you which kind of lavender is in the bottle. If you want a smaller commitment with fuller composition claims, the P&J 100 ml is the one to take, ignoring its flash point line. Buy the 16-ounce essential oil only if the natural claim is the point of the exercise and you are prepared to blend a base note underneath it - and if that is the plan, the cheaper Majestic Pure bottle publishes the blending list that tells you how.

Common questions

Is lavender essential oil or fragrance oil better for candles?

Fragrance oil, if you want the candle to smell of lavender. Lavender is a middle note and it loses more of itself in wax than a fragrance oil does. Essential oil wins on cost per ounce and on the natural claim, and it is the right choice only if those matter more to you than throw.

How much lavender oil per pound of wax?

Six percent is a sensible working load, which is about 27 g per pound. The ceiling comes from the wax, not the oil: GW 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum and the best-documented Golden 444 listing states 5 to 7 percent. No lavender listing on this page publishes a recommended load at all.

Why does my lavender candle smell weak?

Three likely reasons, in order. It has not cured long enough; the load is too low for the wax; or it is an essential oil, which fades faster in wax than a fragrance oil. If it is the last one, blend a base note such as cedarwood or patchouli underneath it - the blending partners published on one of these listings are the standard fix.

What is the best lavender fragrance oil for soy wax?

Of the listings here, the one sold explicitly for soy candles is the VINEVIDA, and the one with the most oil and the most specific scent description is the Plant Guru 8 ounce. All four fragrance oils name candle making; only one names the wax.

Does therapeutic grade mean anything on a lavender oil?

No standards body certifies the phrase, and the listing that uses it names no authority behind it. Treat it as marketing. The checkable claims in this category are composition ones: phthalate-free, paraben-free, vegan, country of manufacture.

Which lavender oil is cheapest per ounce?

The 16-ounce essential oil, by a wide margin, followed by the 8-ounce fragrance oil. You cannot compute it at all for the Bramble Berry listing, because it never states a volume. Check the live prices in the picks above before deciding.

Does lavender discolor candle wax?

None of these listings publishes a discoloration note, so we will not claim one either way. The oils with a documented browning problem are the vanillin-heavy vanillas, where one supplier publishes it outright. Pour a single tealight first and you will know in a week.
