So this list is ranked on the things that are checkable: whether the scents are named, how much oil you get, and how the fragrance family behaves in wax.
How we picked
- Named scents. An unnamed oil cannot be re-ordered, which caps you at one good candle.
- Sold for candles, not diffuser-only. Candle oils are generally formulated for a higher flash point.
- Enough volume to matter. A 4 oz bottle scents roughly 50 oz of wax at 8 percent. A 0.33 oz sampler scents one candle.
- Fragrance family behavior in wax, which is documented and predictable even though the smell is not.

What that means
Named scents matter more than they look. Kit fragrance oils are usually unlabeled, so when one of your candles turns out well you have no way to make it again.
The listing does not publish a recommended fragrance load, so use the wax maker's figure instead. Golden Wax 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum, and most makers land between 6 and 8 percent.
Forest Pine and Harvest Spice are the two that hold up at a high load. Vanilla in soy tends to discolor the wax to a cream over a few weeks, which is a cosmetic issue rather than a fault.

What that means
Essential oils are volatile plant distillates. In a diffuser, where nothing is burning, that volatility is the point. In a candle it means most of the aromatic compounds leave before they can scent a room.
You can make an essential oil candle work: use a high load, choose the heavier oils such as patchouli, cedarwood or clove, and accept a weaker throw than a fragrance oil would give.

This is the part that is genuinely predictable. Perfumery classifies aromatic compounds by volatility, and volatility is exactly what determines whether a scent survives a cure and a burn.

How much fragrance oil per pound of wax?
Golden Wax 464 publishes 1 to 2 ounces per pound, which is 6 to 12 percent by weight, with a 10 percent maximum. Most makers work at 6 to 8 percent.
Which fragrance oils smell strongest in candles?

Can I use perfume in a candle?

Do I need a different fragrance oil for soy wax?
