Best Phthalate-Free Fragrance Oils for Candles
Phthalate-free is a label claim. This ranks the oils on how much of the claim they document, and says what the claim does and does not tell you.
We have not burned these candles and we do not claim to have. Here is what we did instead. Links to Amazon earn us a commission at no extra cost to you — disclosure.

People search for phthalate-free fragrance oil for a reason, and this page is not going to tell them whether that reason is a good one. We have not found a source we can cite on phthalate exposure from a burning candle, so we are not going to make a health claim in either direction.
What we can do is answer the question underneath: which oils actually say it, and what else do they document while they are at it. That is checkable, it varies enormously between listings, and it turns out to matter for a practical reason that has nothing to do with health.
What the claim is, and what it is not
The four pieces of documentation worth having, in the order they affect what you actually do:
- Flash point. The temperature at which the oil's vapor can ignite. It decides which waxes you can use the oil in, and it is the only one of the four with a hard practical consequence.
- An IFRA reference. The fragrance industry's safety assessment framework. A listing that references it is telling you the formulation was developed against a standard.
- The phthalate-free claim, plus its usual companions, paraben-free and vegan.
- Origin and manufacture. Where it was made, which is what you fall back on when the rest is absent.
Who publishes what
| Oil | Phthalate-free | Flash point | IFRA reference |

| BrambleBerry Sandalwood | Yes, plus vegan-friendly | Not published | Not published |
| P&J Clean Home set | Not stated on this listing | Not published | Not published |
That last row is the most useful thing on this page. It is the same brand as the three above it, making the same oils, and the specific listing publishes none of the claims. Read the listing you are on, not the brand you think you are buying.
Why the flash point is the one that matters
A correction is owed here, and it is ours. Until this week several pages on this site said that no fragrance oil we stock published a flash point. That was wrong: re-reading the listings on 2026-09-26, four P&J oils publish one. Those pages have been corrected and the figures are in the table above.
The reason it matters is that fragrance goes into hot wax, and how hot depends on the wax.
| Wax | Published figure | Flash point needed |
|---|---|---|
| GW 464 container soy | Add fragrance at 170F | Above 170F |
| Coconut soy blend | Heat to 160F, then stir in fragrance | Above 160F |
| Gel wax | Pour at 215 to 225F | 170F or greater, stated by the gel suppliers |
Which leaves every oil here unverified on this point rather than unsuitable, and for gel wax that distinction is the difference between following the supplier's instruction and guessing at it. The safe route needs no figure from the oil at all: follow the temperature the wax maker publishes for adding fragrance, which for GW 464 is 170F.
How we picked
- A stated phthalate-free claim on the listing itself, not on the brand's website. Six of the seven have one; the seventh is here as the contrast.
- A published flash point. Four oils have one. They rank first because it is the only figure with a hard consequence.
- An IFRA reference, which the same four carry and nothing else here does.
- Companion claims, paraben-free, vegan, cruelty-free, where stated.
- Origin, where stated.
- Scent family, used as the tie-break: woods and spices hold up in wax better than citrus, which is the finding on our scent throw page.
We have not burned these oils and we do not claim to. The method is on how we pick.

Top pick · A single scent in volume from the best-documented supplier here
P&J Trading Vanilla Fragrance Oil, 100 ml
P&J Trading
One scent, 100 ml, and the full set of P&J composition claims: phthalate-free, cruelty-free, US manufacture and an IFRA reference. Its flash point line is printed without a unit and contradicts the same seller's other vanilla bottles, so we do not count it.

What that means
The flash point line here reads Flash Points greater than 451, with no unit. The same seller's 30 ml Vanilla Bean says greater than 761 and its 100 ml Vanilla Bean says greater than 200. Three figures across one product line is a reason to ignore all of them and work from the wax instead: GW 464 publishes adding fragrance at 170F.
One hundred milliliters of a single scent is a different purchase from a six-bottle sampler. It is what you buy once you know which scent you want to make ten of.
Vanilla in soy discolors the wax to a cream over a few weeks. That is vanillin oxidizing and it is cosmetic, but it is worth knowing before you pour a white candle.
Good
- A full 100 ml of one scent, roughly ten 8-ounce candles
- Publishes phthalate-free, cruelty-free and US manufacture
- Single scent in enough volume to make a batch
Less good
- Flash point figure is printed with no unit and contradicts the seller's other vanilla listings
- No published recommended load, so use the wax maker's maximum
- Vanilla discolors white soy over time
Skip this one if
You do not know which scent you want yet. A six-bottle set costs less than this and tells you what you like before you commit to 100 ml of one thing.

Pick 2 · The holiday season the site's readers are actually buying for
P&J Fragrance Oil Autumn Set, 6 scents
P&J Trading
Six named autumn scents rather than six unnamed bottles. Being able to re-order the one that worked, by name, is the difference between a hobby and a lucky accident.

What that means
Named scents matter more than they look. Kit fragrance oils are usually unlabeled, so when one of your candles turns out well you have no way to make it again.
The listing does not publish a recommended fragrance load, so use the wax maker's figure instead. Golden Wax 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum, and most makers land between 6 and 8 percent.
Forest Pine and Harvest Spice are the two that hold up at a high load. Vanilla in soy tends to discolor the wax to a cream over a few weeks, which is a cosmetic issue rather than a fault.
Good
- Six named, re-orderable scents
- Season-appropriate range for gift candles
- Sold specifically for candle making rather than diffuser-only
Less good
- No published recommended load, though the flash point is stated
- Vanilla discolors soy over time
Skip this one if
You want one scent in quantity. A six-bottle sampler is the wrong purchase if you already know you want to make twelve of the same candle.

Pick 3 · Bright scents that do not read as festive
P&J Trading Citrus Fragrance Oil Set, 6 scents
P&J Trading
Lemon, lime, orange, bergamot, grapefruit and lemongrass. Citrus is the hardest family to make last in a candle, which makes this the set that teaches you the most about cure time.

- Not published on the listing
What that means
Citrus notes are the lightest and most volatile in perfumery, which is exactly why a citrus candle often smells strong cold and weak lit. The molecules that carry the scent leave first.
The usual answer is a longer cure and a load at the top of what your wax will take. It is also the reason most commercial citrus candles are blended with something heavier underneath.
Good
- Six named citrus scents
- Blends well with the autumn set for depth
- Useful outside the holiday window
Less good
- Citrus is the least persistent family in a candle
- No published load guidance, and the flash point figure is printed without a unit
Skip this one if
You want the strongest possible scent throw from a first batch. A vanilla or spice base will get you there with less work.

Pick 4 · Eight phthalate-free scents in one box
VINEVIDA Clean Scents Fragrance Oil Set, 8 Scents
VINEVIDA
The widest phthalate-free set here at eight scents, with vegan and paraben-free stated alongside it and US manufacture on the listing. What it does not publish is a flash point, which matters if you ever pour anything hotter than soy.

What that means
Eight scents is two more than the standard six-bottle sampler, and clean scents are the family that sells best in a plain jar.
The phthalate-free and vegan claims are stated plainly, which is what this page ranks on. The gap is the flash point: without one you cannot confirm the oil suits a gel pour, and for soy at a published 170F addition temperature it is a smaller concern.
VINEVIDA states the same composition claims across its range, so this set and its single 4 oz bottles carry identical documentation.
Good
- Eight scents, the widest phthalate-free set in these picks
- Vegan and paraben-free stated as well as phthalate-free
- US manufacture stated on the listing
Less good
- No published flash point
- No published recommended load
- Sampler sizes rather than batch volume
Skip this one if
You pour gel wax. Gel suppliers ask for a flash point of 170F or greater and this listing publishes no figure to check against.

Pick 5 · The seasonal scent, with vegan and cruelty-free both stated
BrambleBerry Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil
Bramble Berry
The only oil in these picks that states vegan and cruelty-free and paraben-free and phthalate-free together. Pumpkin spice is the autumn scent people actually ask for, and spice notes hold up at a high load.

What that means
Spice blends are the other family that survives wax well, alongside woods. They are also the ones that sell from about September, which is why this listing exists as a seasonal single rather than part of a set.
It carries the fullest set of composition claims in these picks: vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free and phthalate-free, all on one listing.
As with the sandalwood, the claims are about what is not in the bottle. Nothing on the listing tells you how hot you can take it.
Good
- The most complete set of composition claims in these picks
- A spice blend, which holds up at a high fragrance load
- Single seasonal scent rather than a sampler
Less good
- No published flash point
- No IFRA reference on the listing
- A strongly seasonal scent with a short selling window
Skip this one if
You want a scent you can sell year round. Pumpkin spice is a September to November product and the woody and clean families are not.

Pick 6 · A craft-supply brand rather than a marketplace seller
BrambleBerry Sensuous Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
Bramble Berry
Bramble Berry is a soap and candle supply house rather than an Amazon-only brand, and the listing states made without parabens or phthalates plus vegan-friendly. Sandalwood is a base note, which is the family that survives a cure.

- IFRA documentation

What that means
Woody base notes are the most reliable family in wax. They carry through a cure and they do not thin out in the first hour the way citrus does.
The listing is written for soap as much as for candles, and its skin-contact language is a soap claim rather than a candle one. Ignore it for this purpose.
For a supplier of this type we expected an IFRA reference and a flash point on the listing and neither appears. The documentation exists on professional supply sites; it is not on this Amazon page.
Good
- States phthalate-free and paraben-free plainly
- A craft supply house rather than a marketplace-only brand
- A base-note scent family that holds up through a cure
Less good
- No published flash point
- No IFRA reference on the listing
- Listing copy is written for soap first, candles second
Skip this one if
You want the documentation on the page you are buying from. The P&J listings publish a flash point and an IFRA reference and this one publishes neither.

Pick 7 · Candles for a kitchen or a bathroom
P&J Fragrance Oil Clean Home Set, 6 scents
P&J Trading
Lemongrass, fresh cotton, clean and fresh, aloe, bamboo and orange. The set for rooms where a heavy dessert scent would be wrong.

- 6 bottlesSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
- Recommended load
- Not published on the listing
What that means
Clean and cotton fragrances are usually built on light musks, which hold up in wax better than citrus does and worse than spice does.
These are the scents that work in a smaller room. A heavy bakery fragrance in a bathroom is overwhelming at any load.
Good
- Named scents
- Suited to small rooms
- Less seasonal than the autumn set
Less good
- Less distinctive than the spice or citrus sets
- No published flash point
Skip this one if
You are making gift candles for December. The autumn set is the one people expect to receive.
What an IFRA reference does and does not mean
Worth being precise, because the wording on these listings invites over-reading. P&J states its formulations were developed by IFRA certified master perfumers. That is a claim about who blended the oil.
It is not the same as an IFRA certificate for the finished product, which is a document stating the maximum safe concentration for a specific application category. If you are selling candles and need that document, the place to get it is a supplier who will send you one, not a marketplace bullet point. Our selling candles page covers where the paperwork starts to matter.
What none of them publishes
- A recommended maximum load. Not one of the seven. Use the wax maker's published maximum instead: 10 percent for GW 464, and the figures on the candle wax temperature chart for everything else.
- A skin-safe concentration for candles, which is not a candle question anyway. Bramble Berry's listings talk about skin contact because they sell to soap makers.
- Cold throw or hot throw data. Nobody publishes it, which is why how to increase scent throw ranks the levers you control instead.
If the goal is a cleaner candle overall
A phthalate-free oil is one decision out of four, and the other three are bigger. The wax is the bulk of the candle: eco-friendly candle wax sets out what can honestly be claimed for each family. The wick is the thing actually burning, and the cotton and wood wicks we rank publish lead-free and zinc-free composition. And the load matters: less fragrance oil in the candle is less of everything in the candle.
If you want the shortest honest version: a soy or coconut wax, a cotton wick that publishes its composition, a phthalate-free oil that publishes a flash point, and 6 to 8 percent rather than the maximum. That is a defensible candle and every part of it is checkable.
What we would buy
For the fullest paper trail on the page you are buying from: the P&J 100 ml single, which publishes phthalate-free, cruelty-free, US manufacture and an IFRA reference. Its flash point line is printed without a unit and does not count. Nothing else in our catalog documents its composition as thoroughly.
For a set rather than a single: the P&J Autumn or Citrus sets, which carry the same composition claims across six bottles.
For the widest phthalate-free choice: the VINEVIDA eight-scent set, with vegan and paraben-free stated too, on the understanding that you are taking the flash point on trust.
And if you are pouring gel, buy from the flash-point column and nowhere else. The gel suppliers state 170F or greater, and an oil that publishes no figure cannot be checked against it.

Common questions
What is the best phthalate-free fragrance oil for candles?
The P&J 100 ml singles, because the listing publishes the whole set of composition claims on one page: phthalate-free, cruelty-free, US manufacture and an IFRA reference. Its flash point figure is printed without a unit, so we do not count it, and Bramble Berry and VINEVIDA publish no flash point at all.
Are phthalate-free fragrance oils better for candles?
We have not found a source we can cite on phthalate exposure from a burning candle, so we do not make a health claim either way. What we can say is that phthalate-free is a composition claim, and that the listings making it vary enormously in what else they document.
Does phthalate-free mean the oil is safe?
No. It says a class of solvent is absent. It does not tell you the flash point, the maximum safe load, or whether the oil has been assessed for your use. Those are separate documents, and most listings that claim phthalate-free publish none of them.
Which candle fragrance oils publish a flash point?
None of them, on the standard we now apply. Four P&J listings print a figure - greater than 451 on the Vanilla 100 ml, greater than 200 on the Autumn and Cozy Home sets, greater than 217 on the Citrus set - all without a unit, and the same seller prints greater than 761 for a 30 ml bottle of a scent it lists at greater than 200 in 100 ml. A number that changes with the bottle and never states its unit is not a published flash point.
What flash point do I need for candle fragrance oil?
Above the temperature you add the oil at. GW 464 publishes adding fragrance at 170F and a coconut soy blend publishes 160F. Since no oil we stock publishes a flash point we can rely on, work from the wax maker's figure rather than the oil's: heat to the published range, add at the published temperature, and do not improvise upward. Gel wax suppliers state a fragrance minimum of 170F and pour at 215 to 225F.
Does IFRA certified mean the oil is certified?
Read the wording carefully. P&J states its formulations were developed by IFRA certified master perfumers, which is a claim about who blended the oil. That is not the same as an IFRA certificate for the finished product stating a maximum concentration for your application.
Are Bramble Berry oils phthalate-free?
The two listings in these picks state made without parabens or phthalates, and one adds vegan and cruelty-free. Neither publishes a flash point or an IFRA reference on the Amazon listing.
Why does one P&J listing not mention phthalate-free?
Because listings are written per product, not per brand. The Clean Home set is in our picks specifically to show that: same brand, same kind of oil, and the bullets publish none of the claims the other P&J listings do. Always read the listing you are on.
