A candle with pressed flowers set into the surface is one of the most photographed objects in this craft, and the question underneath it is a fire-safety question that almost nobody answers directly.
So here is the direct answer, and then the evidence for it.
The burn-path rule
Published candle fire-safety guidance makes the general point rather than the botanical one. The NFPA and the CPSC both frame candle safety around managing an open flame and keeping it away from anything that can catch fire, and the National Candle Association's standards material covers the fire-safety specifications sold candles are built to. None of them says dried flowers by name, and none needs to.
The practical consequence is that a botanical-decorated candle has to be designed, not decorated as an afterthought. The flowers go where the wax will still be solid when the candle is burning, which means the outer edge of a wide vessel, the outside face of a pillar, or the surface of something that is never lit at all.
What the sellers publish, which is nothing
We read three dried botanical listings in full. The pattern is consistent and it is the most useful thing on this page.
| Set | Form | Quantity published | Flame or heat statement | Primary market |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pressed flowers, 110+ pieces | Pressed flat | 110+ pieces, 112 types | None | Resin crafts |
| 9 bags with tweezers | Whole | 7 g per bag | None | Soap, bath, resin |
| 21 bags | Whole | Not published | None | Soap, bath, resin, potpourri |
Not one of the three says anything about a flame, a heat tolerance, or a lit candle. Candle making appears in all three as one item on a long list of uses - the 110-piece set lists it fifth of eight, behind resin molds, jewelry, handicrafts and decorations.
That is not a scandal and the sellers are not concealing a hazard. They are selling to soap makers and resin crafters, where a botanical is encased in a cold cure and nothing is ever lit, and they have added candle making to the keywords because people search for it. But it does mean there is no published guidance from anyone selling this material about putting it near a flame, and you should not read the word candle on the packet as an assurance.
One listing does describe the candle use accurately, and in the seller's own words: use the whole flower as candle decor. Decor is exactly the right word, and it is the only candle-specific guidance published anywhere in the category.

Top pick · Pressed flat, which is the form that actually works on a candle
Dried Pressed Flowers with Tweezers, 110+ Pieces
Generic (Amazon listing)
Pressed and flat rather than whole and round, which is the single thing that matters if a botanical is going on the outside of a candle. Vacuum sealed, tweezers included, and sold for resin rather than for candles.

What that means
Pressed flat is the whole argument. A pressed petal can be laid on a surface and warmed in, and it stays where it is put; a whole rosebud sits up off the surface and falls over.
Vacuum sealing is a sensible answer to a real problem. Pressed flowers are brittle and a loose bag of them arrives as fragments.
Candle making is the fifth of eight listed uses, and the primary use is resin. That is worth knowing because resin encases a botanical in a cold cure and a candle does not.
Good
- Pressed flat, the only form here suited to a candle surface
- Vacuum sealed, so they arrive intact
- Tweezers included
- Over a hundred pieces across many varieties
Less good
- Sold primarily for resin, where the material behaves nothing like it does on wax
- No weight or dimensions published
- No flame, heat or candle-safety statement published
- Brittle - pressed flowers break if handled with fingers
Skip this one if
You want the three-dimensional look of whole rosebuds and lavender sprigs clustered on a candle top. Pressed flowers are a different aesthetic entirely.

Pick 2 · The only set that publishes how much you get
Dried Flowers, 9 Bags with Tweezers
Generic (Amazon listing)
Nine varieties at a published 7 g a bag, with tweezers in the box. It is also the one listing that says plainly what these are for on a candle: use the whole flower as candle decor. Decor, not an ingredient.

What that means
Seven grams a bag is the only published quantity in this category and it reframes the whole purchase: 63 g of dried flowers is a lot of surface decoration and almost nothing by weight. You are not buying a material, you are buying a garnish.
The word decor is the seller's own, and it is the correct word. Nobody selling these suggests putting them in the wax.
Tweezers sound like a throwaway inclusion and are not. Placing a dried petal onto a surface that is setting is a tweezers job, and fingers push it under.
Good
- The only set here that publishes a weight per bag
- Tweezers included, which is the right tool for the job
- The seller describes the candle use accurately as decor
- Resealable individually sealed bags
Less good
- Nine varieties against twenty-one on the larger set
- No flame, heat or candle-safety statement published
- Whole flowers, not pressed, so they stand off the surface
- 63 g total is small if you had a larger plan
Skip this one if
You wanted enough botanicals for a production run. Nine 7 g bags decorate a few dozen candle tops and then you are reordering.

Pick 3 · The widest range of named varieties
Dried Flowers for Candle Making, 21 Bags
Generic (Amazon listing)
Twenty-one named varieties, individually sealed and labeled, and not one word anywhere in the listing about flame, heat or a candle that is lit. Buy it for surface decoration and understand that the seller is selling to soap and bath makers.

What that means
Twenty-one labeled bags is the real advantage. Decorating the top of a candle is a matter of picking two or three things that look right together, and a labeled set lets you do that without opening everything.
The listing spends its fourth bullet on antioxidants and skin anti-aging, which tells you who it was written for. None of that has anything to do with a candle.
No weight per bag is published, so the quantity is genuinely unknown before it arrives. A comparable set publishes 7 g a bag.
Good
- Twenty-one varieties, each sealed and labeled separately
- Resealable bags, so a part-used variety keeps
- The broadest color and shape range of the three sets here
Less good
- No weight published per bag or in total
- No flame, heat or candle-safety statement anywhere in the listing
- Written for bath and skincare buyers, with candle making added to the uses
- Whole flowers rather than pressed, so they sit proud of the surface
Skip this one if
You want pressed flat botanicals to sit flush on a finished surface. Whole rosebuds and lily heads are three-dimensional and will not lie down.

Pick 4 · Two identical candles at once
MILIVIXAY 2-Piece Pillar Candle Mold, 2 x 5 inch
MILIVIXAY
Two molds of the same published size, which is what you want if the plan is a matched pair rather than a set of different heights.

What that means
A mold sealer is the part first-time pillar pourers do not know they need. It plugs the wick hole at the base so hot wax does not run out of the bottom.
The published 1:1 soy-to-beeswax suggestion is the maker telling you that straight soy will not hold a freestanding shape, which is true and is covered on our pillar wax page.
Unlike the 3-piece set, this listing does not publish the wax weight, so you are measuring the first pour yourself.
Good
- Two identical molds, so a pair pours in one session
- Mold sealer included, which several mold listings omit
- Publishes both diameter and height
Less good
- No published wax weight, unlike the same maker's 3-piece set
- Plastic construction
- Included wick is unnamed and unsized

You want a range of sizes to experiment with. Two copies of one size is a production choice, not an exploration one.

Pick 5 · Leveling a candle top without blowing the wax around
WORKPRO 400W Mini Heat Gun with 2 Temperature Settings
WORKPRO
The lowest published airflow in these picks at 100 L/min, a published cable length, and candle making named as a use on the listing. For a tool whose whole job is re-melting a thin liquid skin, airflow is the number that matters and this is the one that prints the smallest.

What that means
A hundred liters a minute is the smallest airflow figure any listing in this category publishes. That matters because the surface you are working on is liquid for the few seconds you are heating it, and more air pushes it toward the rim.
Its lower temperature setting, 482F, is still about four times the published melt point of container soy. Every heat gun is far hotter than the job needs, so the control you actually have is distance and time.
The listing gives both airflow figures and both temperature figures without saying which pairs with which. The reasonable reading is low with low, and we are flagging that it is a reading rather than a statement.
Good
- Lowest published airflow in these picks
- Publishes cable length, temperature settings and airflow
- Names candle making as an intended use
Less good
- Does not state which airflow pairs with which temperature
- 482F is the lowest setting; there is no variable dial
- No published stand or kickstand
Skip this one if
You want to set an actual low temperature on a dial. This is a two-position switch, and the variable guns in these picks are the only ones that can be turned down near wax temperatures.

Pick 6 · The jar most beginner recipes assume
SHOWIN Thick Glass Candle Jars with Wood Lids, 7 oz, 16 pack
SHOWIN
Seven ounces in thick glass with a wooden lid, sixteen to a box. This is the size that lines up with the standard soy wick charts and the quantity that lets you actually test a wick.

- Glass
- Described as thickSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
- Internal diameter
- Not published on the listing
What that means
Seven fluid ounces of container takes roughly 5.6 ounces of soy wax by weight, at the 0.8 fill factor soy runs at. Sixteen jars is therefore about 5.6 pounds of wax - close to a 5 lb bag plus what stays in the pot.
The listing does not publish an internal diameter, and diameter is what the wick chart needs. Measure across the inside of the glass with a ruler before you order wicks.
Thick glass matters for a real reason: thin glass near a large flame is a crack risk, and a cracked candle jar is a fire.
Good
- Quantity matches a 5 lb bag of wax almost exactly
- Thick glass, which is a genuine safety point
- Lids included, so candles can be given as gifts
Less good
- Internal diameter is not published, so wick sizing needs a ruler
- Sixteen jars is a commitment to one size
Skip this one if
You are still testing which jar size you like. Buy one small pack of two sizes rather than sixteen of one.
Pressed beats whole, for a physical reason
The two forms are sold side by side and they are not interchangeable for this job.
- A pressed flower is flat. It lies against a wax surface, can be warmed in so the wax closes over its edges, and stays where it was put. It also sits below the plane the flame works in.
- A whole rosebud is three-dimensional. It stands proud of the surface, it will not stay flat, and the part standing up is the part closest to the flame.
- Pressed is more fragile. The 110-piece set is vacuum sealed specifically because loose pressed flowers arrive as fragments, and tweezers are not optional with them.
- Whole buds look better in a wide bowl candle where there is genuine distance from the wick, and in anything that is never lit.
Both of the sets that include tweezers include them for the same reason: placing a dried petal onto wax that is setting is a tweezers job, and fingers push it under the surface where you did not want it.
Three ways to do it, ranked by how safe they are
- On the outside of a pillar. The safest by a distance. Press botanicals onto the outer face of a cooled pillar candle, seal with a thin coat of wax, and the flame burns down a channel in the middle while the decorated surface is never in the melt pool. A pillar needs a pillar wax: best candle molds covers the mold and best soy wax for pillar candles the wax that holds the shape.
- Around the rim of a wide container, outside the melt pool. Workable only if the vessel is genuinely wide and the wick genuinely small, because a correctly wicked container candle melts right to the wall - which is the whole point of correct wicking. In practice this means accepting an under-wicked candle, which will tunnel, so it is a decorative object rather than a candle that burns well.
- On something that is never lit. Wax melts, wax sachets, decorative blocks. No flame, no melt pool, no conflict - and how to make wax melts is the process.
What is not on that list is embedding botanicals in the body of a container candle where the melt pool will reach them. That is the version people photograph and it is the version we are not going to recommend.
How to fix a botanical to a surface
- Let the candle set completely first. Dropping flowers into liquid wax sinks them, and a sunk flower is in the melt pool by definition.
- Warm the surface, do not remelt it. A heat gun on its lowest setting, kept moving, softens the top millimeter. Best heat gun for candle making ranks them on published airflow, which is what decides whether a softened surface stays flat.
- Place with tweezers, pressing lightly so the botanical sits in rather than on the softened wax.
- Let it cool, then seal with a thin brush of melted wax over the botanical. This is the step that matters: a sealed petal is encased rather than exposed, and a loose petal can lift and drift toward the wick.
- Keep a clear inch between the nearest botanical and the wick, minimum, and more if the vessel allows.
What dried flowers do to the scent
Nothing useful, and this is worth saying because the assumption runs the other way.
Dried botanicals carry a faint residual aroma at room temperature and they are not a fragrance source in a candle - they are not being heated, because they are outside the melt pool, and even if they were, the quantity is tiny against the oil load. Scent comes from fragrance oil at a measured percentage of the wax weight, which how much fragrance oil per pound sets out, and dried lavender on top of a candle contributes essentially none of it.
If you want a lavender candle, buy lavender fragrance oil and put dried lavender on top for the look. Best lavender fragrance oils for candles ranks the listings.
Why gel wax is the exception
One place on this site already discusses suspended objects, and it works differently. Best gel wax for candles notes that visible objects suspended inside are the entire aesthetic of gel - shells, sand, glass beads, wax shapes.
Note which of those are combustible: none. Gel candles suspend inert objects, and they are poured above 200F, which is hotter than anything else on this site. Dried plant matter is the wrong material for that too, for both reasons. The gel exception is not an exception for botanicals.
What we would buy
The pressed set, because flat is the form that works and vacuum sealing is the packing that gets it to you intact. Add the 9-bag set if you want whole buds for a pillar's outer face - it is the only listing in the category that publishes a weight, at 7 g a bag, which tells you honestly that you are buying a garnish rather than a material.
Then buy a pillar mold and a pillar wax rather than trying to make a container candle do this. The pillar is the format where a decorated outer surface and a working flame genuinely coexist, and everything else is a compromise between the photograph and the candle.

Common questions
Can you put dried flowers in a candle?
On the surface outside the burn path, yes. In the melt pool or near the wick, no - dried plant matter is combustible and a melt pool spreads to the container wall within a few hours of burning. The safest version is pressed botanicals on the outer face of a pillar candle, sealed under a thin coat of wax.
Are dried flowers in candles a fire hazard?
They are if they are in the burn path. Not one of the three botanical listings we read publishes any statement about flame or heat, because the category is sold for soap, bath and resin rather than for candles. Treat them as decoration that must stay out of the melt pool.
Should I use pressed or whole dried flowers on a candle?
Pressed. A pressed flower is flat, lies against the surface, and can be warmed in and sealed over. A whole rosebud stands proud of the surface, will not lie flat, and the part standing up is the part nearest the flame.
How do you stick dried flowers to a candle?
Let the candle set fully, warm the top millimeter with a heat gun on its lowest setting, place the botanical with tweezers, let it cool, then seal it under a thin brush of melted wax. The seal is the step that matters, because a loose petal can lift toward the wick.
Do dried flowers add scent to a candle?
Essentially none. They sit outside the melt pool so they are not being heated, and the quantity is negligible against the fragrance oil load. Scent comes from fragrance oil dosed as a percentage of wax weight; dried botanicals are for the look.
Can you put dried flowers in a container candle?
Only around the rim of a genuinely wide vessel, and it costs you something: a correctly wicked container candle melts all the way to the wall, so keeping the rim solid means under-wicking, which causes tunneling. A pillar is the better format for this.
Can you put dried flowers in gel wax?
No. Gel suspends inert objects - shells, sand, glass beads - and it is poured above 200F, hotter than any other wax on this site. Dried plant matter is both combustible and unsuited to that pour temperature.
How much dried flower do you need for a candle?
Very little. The one set here that publishes a weight gives 7 g per bag across nine bags, about 63 g in total, and that decorates dozens of candle tops. You are buying a garnish rather than a material.
What should I tell someone I give a flower-decorated candle to?
That the botanicals are decorative, that they sit outside the melt pool by design, and that anything coming loose should be removed before lighting. That is in addition to the standard published warnings, not instead of them.
