A mold is a simple object and the listings for them are unusually vague. Six molds in our picks, and exactly one publishes the weight of wax each cavity takes. Two publish nothing about size at all.
That is not pedantry. The diameter of the mold decides the wick, and the capacity decides how many candles a bag of wax makes. Without them you are buying a shape and finding out the rest afterwards.
Before the mold: the wax has to change
The waxes that work are on best soy wax for pillar candles, the higher-melt paraffins are on best paraffin wax for candles, and beeswax is on best beeswax for candle making. Sort the wax out before you sort the mold out.

The wick pin deserves its own sentence, because it is the feature most first-time mold buyers have never heard of. It is a spike that sits in the mold while the wax sets, leaving a clean channel you thread the wick into afterwards. No sealing the base, no wick dragged off-center by the pour.

Wicking a molded candle
A pillar is harder to wick than a container candle because there is no glass holding the heat in. The melt pool has to reach the edge of the wax and then stop, since there is nothing to contain it if it does not.
One mold maker publishes a wick specification and it is in a system of its own: 30 ply flat-braid wicking for the 3-inch mold, 24 ply for the 2-inch. Ply numbering is not the ECO or CD numbering the rest of this site uses, and we have found no published table converting between them. It is still the only wick guidance printed on any mold here.

For everything else, size from the diameter using the wick size chart and expect to burn-test. Included wicks in mold sets are almost always generic and unsized, which is the same problem kit wicks have.
Release, which is the part that goes wrong
Two mold listings in our picks publish a release routine and they agree with each other: coat the mold lightly with oil before pouring, and if the candle sticks, 15 minutes in the freezer at -4F.
- Let it set completely. A warm candle deforms on the way out and the dent is permanent.
- Chill, do not force. Wax contracts more than metal or plastic does, so cold releases what pulling will not.
- Flared beats straight. The votive molds here are flared specifically to aid release, which is why votives are the forgiving format to start with.
- Higher melt point helps. A harder wax shrinks away from the mold wall as it cools, which is the same property that makes it stand up.

What that means
The published heat tolerance comfortably exceeds any candle pour temperature, so the material is not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is that you cannot size a wick for a shape whose diameter is not published.
