This comparison is usually written as a values argument: natural versus petroleum, sustainable versus not. That framing is not useless but it hides the practical differences, which are about temperature and wick size and are much easier to act on.

Soy
Hydrogenated soybean oil, usually blended. Low melt point, wide pour window, published numbers for the named products. It frosts and it pulls away from glass, both cosmetic. It is the default recommendation and deserves to be.
Its weakness is scent throw, which is merely good rather than strong, and the reason most people's second wax is a coconut blend.
Coconut blends
Coconut wax on its own is very soft, so it is almost always sold blended with soy. The blend has a lower melt point than straight soy, which is the mechanism behind the better fragrance release: the pool forms faster and the fragrance volatilizes more readily.
The same property is the drawback. A softer, lower-melting candle slumps in a warm room and needs its wick retested, usually downward because the wax delivers more freely. Soy vs coconut has the detail.
Beeswax
The oldest candle wax and the most demanding. Its melt point sits far above soy, typically in the 140s to 150s Fahrenheit, which changes every temperature in your process. It burns longer and brighter than any of the others, and it smells faintly of honey without any fragrance at all.
The wick consequence is documented: Tools for Makers publishes an instruction to increase one to two ECO sizes for beeswax over soy. That is not a fine adjustment. A soy-sized wick in beeswax will tunnel on the first burn.
Paraffin
A petroleum refining byproduct, and the strongest scent carrier of the four by general supplier agreement. It also takes dye more cleanly than any natural wax and produces the smoothest surface.
Two practical cautions. First, grade matters enormously: general purpose paraffin has no glass-adhesion additives and will pull away from a jar, while container paraffin is a different product. Second, every published paraffin wick chart is the baseline the soy charts adjust *up* from, so a soy-sized wick in paraffin will be too large.

What that means
Two suppliers publish slightly different melt points for the same wax, 115 to 120F and 113 to 118F. That two-degree gap is normal for a natural wax and it is why you read your own pour temperature rather than trusting a single number.
Ten pounds is 160 ounces of wax, or roughly forty 4-ounce candles at the usual fill. That is a real supply, not a sample.
464 is a soy blend with additives that reduce frosting and hold fragrance better than straight soy. It is not the most natural wax on the shelf and it is not sold as one.

What that means
Beeswax runs a much higher melt point than soy, typically in the 140s to 150s Fahrenheit rather than the 110s. That changes every temperature in your process and it changes the wick.
Published sizing charts say to increase one to two wick sizes for beeswax over soy. That is not a rounding adjustment, it is the difference between a candle that burns and one that tunnels on the first light.
White beeswax is filtered and bleached; yellow is not. White smells less of honey, which is what you want if you are adding fragrance.

What that means
Coconut wax has a lower melt point than soy, which is part of why it releases fragrance more readily. It is also why coconut candles slump in a warm room more easily.
Because the melt point sits lower, the wick that was right in soy is often too large in coconut blend. Re-test the wick when you change wax family; do not carry it over.

Blended Waxes is a US wax manufacturer rather than a repackager, which usually means a technical data sheet exists even when Amazon does not show it.
For container candles, ask the maker which grade this is before you build a candle around it. Paraffin grades differ far more than soy grades do.

What that means
General purpose paraffin is not container paraffin. It has no additives to help it adhere to glass, so expect wet spots where the wax pulls away from the jar wall.
Every published wick chart treats paraffin as the baseline and tells you to size up for soy. If you have been sizing wicks for soy, paraffin needs a smaller wick, not a bigger one.

Skip this one if
You are making candles as gifts and expect to be asked what is in them. Soy is the easier answer, whatever the burn data says.
The clean burn question
We are not going to tell you soy burns cleaner than paraffin, because we have not measured it and the published evidence is more contested than the marketing suggests. What we can say from the published wick data is more useful anyway: an oversized wick in any wax produces soot, and a correctly sized wick in any wax produces much less. Wick sizing dominates wax family on this question.
If soot is your concern, wick too big or too small will help you more than switching wax will.
Which to choose
- First candle: soy. Widest pour window, published numbers, the wax the charts assume.
- You want more scent: coconut soy blend, and retest the wick downward.
- Longest burn, natural, no fragrance: beeswax, and size the wick up one to two.
- Strongest possible scent, and you do not mind petroleum: container-grade paraffin, and size the wick down.
- Molded shapes: pillar wax in whichever family, never a container blend.

Common questions
Which candle wax is best?
For container candles and beginners, soy, because of its wide pour window and published specifications. For scent throw, paraffin then coconut blends. For burn time and a natural product, beeswax.
Is beeswax better than soy?
It burns longer and harder and needs no fragrance, but it costs several times as much, melts far higher, and needs a wick one to two sizes larger than the same jar in soy. Better for some purposes, harder in all of them.
Does soy wax smell as strong as paraffin?
Generally not. Paraffin is widely regarded as the strongest scent carrier, which is why most commercial scented candles still use it or a blend. Coconut soy blends are the strongest of the natural options.
Do different waxes need different wicks?
Yes, and the published charts are explicit. Lone Star instructs you to size up one to three moving from a paraffin-basis chart to soy; Tools for Makers instructs you to increase one to two sizes for beeswax over soy.
Can I mix waxes?
Commercial blends do it constantly, but a home blend is a wax whose melt point, pour temperature and correct wick are all unknown to you. It puts you back to testing everything from scratch, which is a fine project and a poor shortcut.
