What beeswax is actually like to pour
Three differences from soy, none of which appears on any listing, all of which you meet in the first hour.
- It sets fast. A much higher melt point means the working window between pour and set is short. Pour decisively and do not expect to top up an hour later.
- It shrinks and pulls in. Beeswax contracts as it sets and often needs a second top-up pour around the wick, the same behavior paraffin has and soy mostly does not.
- It resists fragrance. Beeswax holds less fragrance oil than soy and it already smells of something. A lightly scented beeswax candle usually smells of beeswax with a hint of the oil.
That third point is why we do not recommend buying beeswax and a fragrance oil in the same order. Pour it unscented first. If it turns out that the honey note is what you wanted, you have saved the cost of the oil.
