Two things are true about wicking beeswax, and they pull in opposite directions. Beeswax is the oldest candle wax in use, so the wick family built for it is centuries old. And it is the wax with the least published sizing data of any on this site.
That leaves you with two routes. One has a published chart and a published instruction behind it and reaches beeswax by arithmetic. The other is the family beeswax candles were historically made with and reaches beeswax by tradition, with nothing printed to size it. This page uses both and is explicit about which is which.
Why beeswax needs more wick
Melt point. Container soy publishes 113 to 121F across the common products. Beeswax runs far above that, and not one of the six beeswax listings in our beeswax roundup publishes a figure at all.
A wick has to deliver enough liquid wax per hour to keep a pool across the whole container. A wax that melts much higher needs more heat to keep that pool liquid, so the flame has to be bigger, so the wick has to be bigger. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why a wick that is correct in soy tunnels in beeswax.
Route one: the ECO sizes, with the arithmetic shown
Tools for Makers publishes an ECO chart for soy with an instruction attached: increase one to two sizes for beeswax. That instruction is the only published bridge from a soy chart to a beeswax candle that we have found anywhere.

Route two: square braid, the traditional family
Square braid is a cotton wick braided into a square cross-section rather than a flat ribbon. One of the listings in our picks states plainly that square braided wicks were originally designed for beeswax candles, which matches everything else you will read about the format.
It is also the least documented wick family on this site, and we want to be exact about how badly.
So the honest method for square braid is the old one: buy two adjacent sizes, burn both in your actual container with your actual wax, and keep the one that reaches the glass without sooting. Wick burn testing is the procedure, and it matters more here than on any other page of this site.

One genuine advantage of square braid is the priming. A beeswax-primed wick in a beeswax candle means the first thing the flame draws is the same wax as the rest of the candle. The ECO wicks we stock are primed in soy, which is a small mismatch and not a fault.
How we picked
- Published sizing first. The ECO sizes the published derivation actually calls for rank above wicks with no printed guidance, even where the traditional family is the more romantic answer.
- A published container range on the listing, where one exists. Two of the ECO listings publish one, and both disagree with the published chart, which we print.
- Priming stated, and what it is primed with.
- Pre-tabbed, because crimping sustainers by hand is a job nobody enjoys twice.
- Format match. A spool of unprimed wick is the right answer for rolled beeswax sheets and the wrong answer for a poured jar, and it is ranked accordingly.

What that means
Half an inch separates the seller's range from the published chart row. That gap is the reason this site prints both figures instead of averaging them into one number that nobody published.
For beeswax, the derivation on our beeswax chart puts a 3.0-inch container at ECO 10 to 12, which is exactly where this sits.
A 0.79-inch tab is wide. In a narrow container it takes up a meaningful share of the base, and it is worth checking against your jar before buying a hundred.

What that means
The listing and the chart disagree, and by a lot: the seller says 2.3 to 2.6 inches and Lone Star's published soy chart rates ECO 8 up to 3.0 inches. Sellers are consistently the more conservative of the two.
For beeswax the derivation on our beeswax chart takes the published soy row and adds one to two sizes, which puts ECO 8 at roughly a 2.5 to 2.75-inch beeswax container.
Three millimeters is a thickness figure, which almost no cotton wick listing publishes. It is not a substitute for a series size but it is a useful cross-check.

What that means
Lead-free and zinc-free is stated here and only partly stated on the #2. Zinc cores are a legacy paraffin technology and their absence is worth knowing in a wick sold for beeswax.
Buy this alongside one size either side and burn all three in the same jar with the same wax. That is the published-chart substitute and it takes one evening.
Beeswax runs far hotter than soy, so a wick that looks correct in a soy candle will usually be too small here.

This is the largest ECO size we stock, and it is where a wide beeswax candle ends up. Beyond about 4 inches the honest answer is two wicks rather than one larger one.

The 20 mm tab is wide for a small container. In a narrow jar it sits close to the glass, which is worth checking before you commit fifty of them.

What that means
The risk profile inverts at this size. A wick too small tunnels and wastes wax; a wick too large soots, overheats the container and is a safety problem rather than a cosmetic one.
That asymmetry is why we would test upward from #4 rather than starting here, even in a wide jar.

What that means
Rolled beeswax sheets are the one candle format where an unprimed spool wick is the normal choice: you cut a length, lay it along the edge of the sheet and roll it in.
For a poured candle you would have to prime the wick yourself by dipping it in melted wax, and tab it, which is two steps most people would rather buy done.
Five hundred feet is not a hobby quantity. At 6 inches per candle that is roughly a thousand wicks.

The mold makers publish something nobody else does

Ply is a third sizing system, separate from both ECO numbering and square braid numbering, and we have found no published table converting between any of them. We are printing it because it is real published data for molded candles and because pretending the three systems map neatly onto each other would be exactly the kind of invention this site exists not to do.
What we would buy
For a 3-inch beeswax container, which is the most common case: ECO 12, which is the top of the plus-one range the published derivation gives for that diameter. Buy ECO 10 alongside it to bracket the test.
For a 2.5 to 2.75-inch container: ECO 8. Same derivation, one step down.
For votives, tealights and anything under 2 inches: the #2/0 votive wicks, which are the only square braid listing that names the candle format it was made for.
For rolled beeswax sheets: the unprimed spool. It is the one job where an untabbed, unprimed wick is genuinely the correct product and not a shortcut.
And whichever you buy, burn-test it. There is no published beeswax chart, this page has not invented one, and a single four-hour burn tells you more than every number above.

Common questions
What size wick do I need for a beeswax candle?
Larger than the soy size for the same container. Take the published soy ECO row for your diameter and add one to two sizes, per the instruction Tools for Makers publishes with its chart. A 3-inch beeswax container works out at ECO 10 to 12 on that derivation.
Is there a published wick chart for beeswax?
No. We checked Lone Star, CandleScience, Tools for Makers and The Flaming Candle. All publish charts for soy or paraffin; none publishes one for beeswax. What exists is a published instruction to size up one to two from the soy row, and that is what our derived table applies.
What is square braid wick used for?
Beeswax, traditionally. One of the listings in our picks states that square braided wicks were originally designed for beeswax candles. The catch is that no published chart maps square braid numbers to container diameters, so sizing is done by burn test.
Can I use ECO wicks in beeswax?

What wick goes in a beeswax votive?
