Search for a candle making kit for kids and most of what comes back is an adult kit with a child on the packaging. Those kits contain a hot plate, a melting pot and wax that has to reach about 170F. They are perfectly good kits. They are not kids kits, and the distinction is not pedantry: it is the difference between a child making a candle and a child watching an adult make one.

How rolled beeswax candles work
A beeswax sheet is a thin, flexible, honeycomb-textured sheet of pure beeswax. Warm hands soften it in about thirty seconds. You lay a length of wick along one edge, fold the edge over it, and roll the sheet up like a rug. That is the entire process, and the result is a taper candle that burns.
- No melting. Nothing on a stove, nothing on a hot plate, nothing above room temperature.
- No pouring. No molten wax to spill, and no wait for it to set.
- No wick sizing. The wick comes cut to length in the kit and the candle diameter is whatever the child rolls.

A rolled candle is as tall as the edge you roll along. Roll a 10 by 8 inch sheet along its short edge and you get an 8 inch taper; roll it along the long edge and you get a shorter, fatter candle. Both are fine, and knowing the dimension in advance is what lets a parent set expectations.
