Best Luxury Candle Making Kits

SoftOwl Premium Soy Candle Making Kit, Black Edition, 16 TinsEight fragrances, eight dyes and sixteen tins is the most variety on this page, and the reason to buy it is that you can pour sixteen different candles. What it will not tell you is how much wax it gives you to pour them with.

5
Sculpd Candle Making Kit, 2 Candles, Peony Rose
Sculpd Candle Making Kit, 2 Candles, Peony RoseThe two-candle box to check the arithmetic on: it makes twice as many candles as the single kit for less than twice the price, and it lists lower than the pastel version of the same two-candle kit. Same clay-first premise, same missing quantities.
Two people making one vessel each

Every kit on this page sits well above the ordinary starter-box band, and the question a premium kit has to answer is what the difference buys. Sometimes it is four pounds of wax and a melting pot you will still be using in a year. More often it is a presentation box, eight fragrance oils instead of three, and gold lids on the jars.

Both are legitimate purchases. They are not the same purchase, and the listings are written to make them look like one.

What luxury buys, and what it does not

Across this group the extra money goes on four things, in roughly this order of frequency:

  • Variety. Eight fragrance oils and eight dyes instead of three and one. This is the most common upgrade and the cheapest for a seller to provide.
  • Packaging. A giftable outer box, printed labels, ribbons, sometimes individual gift boxes for the finished candles. Real value if the kit is a present, none at all if it is for you.
  • Tools that outlast the wax. A thermometer, a wick trimmer, a snuffer, a larger melting pot. These are the parts still in your kitchen after the consumables are gone.
  • Quantity. More wax, more containers. This is the rarest upgrade of the four, and the only one you can check before buying, because it is the only one anybody publishes a number for.

Notice what is not on that list: better wax, a named wax, or any statement of what the wax is. No kit in this group names its wax, and a premium price does not change that. The wax in a luxury kit is the same unnamed soy as the wax in a cheap one, as far as any of these listings will say.

How we ranked the best luxury candle making kits

In this order, and the first test does most of the work:

  1. Does it publish a wax weight? Without one you cannot work out how many candles the box makes, so you cannot compare two kits at all. One box here publishes a figure for candle wax on its own.
  2. Is there a real heat source, and is its capacity published? A melting pot is the part of a kit you keep. Its capacity decides whether it is still useful once you are buying wax by the bag.
  3. Is there a thermometer? Soy has a pour window, and without a thermometer you are pouring to a guess no matter how expensive the box was.
  4. Will you still own anything in six months? Glass jars with lids, a wick trimmer and a snuffer survive the kit. Dyes, dried flowers and printed labels do not.
  5. Does the listing contradict itself? Two of these five describe their own contents twice and the two descriptions do not match. That is a fact about the seller, not a detail.

One published wax figure for candle wax alone, out of five boxes. That is the state of this category, and it is worse than it looks: the PIUH figure covers soy wax and soap base together, so even that number does not tell you how much candle wax is in the box.

Tin capacity
Not published on the listing
Box weight
Not published on the listing

What that means

A published wax weight is the figure that makes a kit costable, and this is one of only two kits on this page that prints one. Four pounds is 64 ounces of wax, which is a working stock rather than a demonstration: see the arithmetic on this page for what that fills.

The 1.8 liter pot is the largest published melter capacity here, and it is the part of the kit you keep. A pot that size will hold more than the kit's own wax, so it does not become the bottleneck when you buy a named wax later.

The tin capacity is not published, which is the one figure missing from an otherwise unusually specific listing. Ten tins and four pounds of wax only reconcile if the tins are around eight ounces, and the listing does not say that they are.

Good

  • Publishes both a wax weight and a melter capacity, which almost no kit does
  • Includes a thermometer, so the pour temperature is readable rather than guessed
  • Two silicone molds mean you can pour something other than a tin

Less good

  • Tin capacity is not published, so the candle count cannot be worked out exactly
  • 16 dyes and 4 candle paints are a lot of decoration for a first pour
  • Brand has no presence outside the marketplace listing

Skip this one if

You want glass. Everything you pour in this kit goes into a tin or a silicone mold, and a tin candle reads as a craft object rather than a finished one.

Wax weight
Not published on the listing
Jar count
Not published on the listing

What that means

Four cotton wicks and four wood wicks in one box is the genuinely useful inclusion here, and no other kit on this page offers both. Wood and cotton behave differently in the same wax, so a kit that ships both lets you compare them in identical jars on the same evening.

The wick trimmer, snuffer and dipper are the tools a candle owner uses for years, which is what separates this from a box of consumables. They are also the items most likely to be re-boxed as a gift on their own.

Nothing about quantity is published: not the wax weight, not the jar count, and not the volume of the three oils. The 4.81 lb figure is the shipping weight of the whole box including packaging, so it cannot stand in for a wax weight.

Good

  • Ships cotton and wood wicks, so both can be tried in the same wax
  • Glass jars with lids and a reusable accessory set outlast the kit itself
  • Includes a thermometer, which several pricier kits do not

Less good

  • Publishes no wax weight and no jar count, so the candle count is unknowable
  • Does not state whether its melting pot is electric or a pour pot
  • The Paris fragrance-house claim names no house and cannot be checked

Skip this one if

You are buying on quantity. Two of the kits here publish four pounds of wax and this one publishes none, so if cost per candle is the question this is the wrong box to answer it with.

Candle wax weight on its own
Not published on the listing

What that means

At 17.26 lb shipped this is more than three times the weight of any other box here, and that weight is the honest signal: there is a lot of material in it. The catch is that the published 4 lb figure covers soy wax and soap base together, so the candle half of the kit is unquantified.

The listing describes its contents twice and the two lists do not reconcile. One bullet says 4 lb of wax and base, 8 dyes, 6 essential oils, 4 jars and a glass cup; another says soy wax times 10, soap base times 10, jar times 4, glass cup times 4. Buy on the second list and treat the counts as the firmer claim.

The savings claim on the listing, up to 40 percent against buying everything separately, is the seller's arithmetic and names none of the prices it compares. Soap making also wants a lye-safe setup and a different skill, so the second craft is not free in effort even when it is free in money.

Good

  • By far the most material of any kit here, and publishes a shipping weight to prove it
  • The melting pot and thermometer carry over to candle making whatever you do with the soap half
  • Publishes a 4 lb wax and base figure, where most premium kits publish none

Less good

  • The 4 lb figure covers wax and soap base together, so the candle wax weight is unknown
  • Two contents lists on the same listing that do not reconcile
  • Seven soap molds are dead weight if you only want candles

Skip this one if

You only want to make candles. On candle contents alone this is not the most generous box here, and you would be buying soap equipment to find that out.

Wax
Described only as packs of soy wax, with no weight published
Tin capacity
Not published on the listing

What that means

Sixteen tins and eight scents is the most pours and the most combinations of any kit here, and for a gift that is the point: the recipient gets to make a decision sixteen times rather than twice.

The wax is described as packs of soy wax, which is the least specific wording on this page. With neither a wax weight nor a tin capacity published there is no way to know whether sixteen tins can actually be filled from what is in the box.

The title and the bullets disagree on the dye count, which says something about how carefully the listing was written. Treat eight as the number and the extra as a bonus if it turns up.

Good

  • Sixteen tins and eight fragrance oils is the widest variety in this group
  • Includes an electric melter, labels and glue dots, so nothing else is needed
  • Sold in a presentation box, which is most of why these kits are bought

Less good

  • No wax weight published, in a price band where two competitors publish one
  • Tin capacity not published either, so sixteen fillable tins is an assumption
  • Title and bullets give different dye counts on the same listing

Skip this one if

You want to know what you are getting. This is the least quantified kit on a page where the test is published quantities, and it sits in the same price band as boxes that publish them.

Sculpd Candle Making Kit, 2 Candles, Peony Rose

Not published on the listing

What that means

Work out the per-candle cost before choosing between the Sculpd kits. The two-candle boxes are not double the price of the one-candle box, so the single kit is the worst value of the three.

The listing contradicts itself on scent: one bullet names peony rose, another on the same page names basil citrus. The model code says peony. Buy on the model code and the title, and expect the possibility of the other.

This is the stone gray version. The pastel two-candle kit lists higher for the same published contents list, so the color is what the premium buys.

Good

  • Best published per-candle value of the Sculpd line
  • Two vessels means one can go wrong
  • Full contents list published

Less good

  • Bullets name two different fragrances on one listing
  • No wax, clay or fragrance quantities published
  • Still no thermometer or scale

Skip this one if

You are buying this for one person. The second clay block has to be used at the same time as the first, because the bag does not reseal well.

What none of these kits publish

Four figures are missing from every listing in this group, premium pricing or not. They are the four that decide whether your candle works:

  • The melt point of the wax. Named container soys publish one. Golden Wax 464 is 113 to 118F on CandleScience's specification. A kit wax publishes nothing, so you cannot look up how to treat it.
  • The pour temperature. Cal Candle Supply's instructions for GW 464 say heat to 170 to 180F, add fragrance at 170F, pour at 140F. Those numbers belong to that wax, not to whatever is in the box.
  • The maximum fragrance load. Published at 10 percent for GW 464. Unknown for every kit here, which matters because the kits ship enough oil to overload a wax if you use it all in one pour.
  • The vessel capacity. Not one of these kits publishes what its tins or jars hold, which is the other half of the candle-count arithmetic above.

The practical answer is the same as for any kit: use the wicks it ships, pour to the thermometer if it gave you one, and treat the first batch as the experiment. The wick chart starts earning its place on your second batch, when you are buying a named wax with published numbers and wicks sized to jars you have measured.

The gift question

Most of these boxes are bought as presents, and that changes which criteria matter. Presentation stops being a frill and becomes the product, while cost per candle stops mattering much at all. If that is what you are doing, the thing to check is whether the recipient can use the box the day they open it: a kit with a melting pot and a thermometer needs nothing else, and a kit without a heat source needs a pan of simmering water and somebody confident enough to improvise.

The Sculpd kit is the clearest case of presentation as the product. You sculpt the vessel out of air-dry clay, varnish it, then pour the soy wax it includes, and the candle is the smaller half of the evening. The Sculpd candle making kit review goes through the whole line and what its listings never quantify. For presents more broadly, candle gifts covers the pour-ahead timeline, and kits for kids is a different question with a different answer, because the kits worth buying for a child need no heat at all.

When a premium kit is the wrong purchase

If you already know you want to keep making candles, a luxury kit is a slow way to start. The box is priced on variety and packaging, and the thing that actually limits your second batch is wax you can re-order and wicks sized to your jars. Neither arrives in a kit, at any price.

  1. Buy a named wax with a published melt point and pour temperature.
  2. Measure the inside diameter of your containers and buy wicks in two sizes for it.
  3. Buy one fragrance oil you can order again.
  4. Buy a melter or a pouring pot that holds more than one candle's worth of wax.
  5. Pour two identical candles with different wicks and burn-test them.

That is the setup a premium kit is standing in for, and kit versus buying supplies separately works through what each route costs. If you want the gentler version of the same decision, best candle making kits for beginners ranks the ordinary starter boxes on the same tests used here, and what comes in a candle making kit itemizes what you should expect to find in any of them.

Common questions

What is the best luxury candle making kit?

The BISWYLBLJ kit with the 1.8 liter electric melting pot. It is the only box in this group that publishes a wax weight for candle wax on its own, 4 lb of soy, and it includes a thermometer and two silicone molds as well as tins.

Is an expensive candle making kit worth it?

As a gift, often yes: presentation is most of what you are buying and the premium boxes do it properly. As a way to start making candles yourself, usually not, because the extra money goes on variety and packaging rather than on wax you can re-order.

What is the difference between a luxury candle making kit and a beginner kit?

More fragrance oils and dyes, a giftable box, and sometimes a larger melting pot or a wick trimmer and snuffer. What rarely differs is the wax: no kit at any price in this group names its wax or publishes a melt point.

How many candles does a 4 lb candle making kit make?

Four pounds of soy is 64 ounces, which fills about ten 8-ounce jars or twenty 4-ounce jars, because soy takes roughly 80 percent of a vessel's fluid capacity by weight. The catch is that no kit here publishes its vessel capacity, so the figure is an estimate from your own measurement.

Do luxury candle making kits include a heat source?

Most do, and it is the main thing worth paying for. Four of the five kits here include a melting pot or melter; the Sculpd clay kit includes none, so you supply a pan of simmering water. Only one publishes the capacity of the pot it ships.

Which luxury candle making kit is best as a gift?

The SoftOwl Black Edition if the recipient should get the widest choice, with sixteen tins and eight scents, or the Sculpd clay kit if the evening matters more than the candle count. Neither publishes a wax weight, which is the trade you are making for presentation.
