Almost every wick roundup you will find ranks packs by price per wick. That is the wrong axis. A hundred wicks of the wrong size is worse value than twenty of the right one, and the right one is decided entirely by your container diameter and your wax.
So these picks are organized by the containers people actually own, with the published chart range stated on every entry. Where a chart disagrees with another chart, we say so on the product rather than burying it.
How we picked
- Series designation published. A wick sold as ECO 10 or CD 12 can be looked up in a chart. An unlabeled cotton wick cannot, which is why the unlabeled option is ranked last here rather than left out.
- Sold as one size, not an assortment. Burn testing requires enough of one size to test properly.
- Matched to a real container. Every pick states the diameter range its own chart gives it.
- Pre-tabbed. Assembling wick tabs by hand is a solved problem and you should not be solving it.

What that means
The two published ranges above disagree by nearly half an inch for the same wick, and both are printed by people who sell it. That is not an error on anyone's part; the US charts are soy-adjusted and the Wedo chart covers soy and paraffin together.
Practically: if you are in a 3-inch soy jar and you use the US charts, ECO 10 is the starting wick. If you use Wedo's, you want ECO 14 in the same jar. Test both.
The paper filaments in an ECO wick make it curl and self-trim, in the same way CD does. Both are coreless, so there is no metal or zinc in the flame.

What that means
CD wicks curl as they burn, which trims the tip and reduces the mushroom of carbon that builds on a straight wick. That self-trimming behavior is the whole reason the series exists.
The published charts disagree on CD for soy by up to two sizes, because Lone Star prints CD against base paraffin and tells you to size up one to three for soy. Our chart shows both readings side by side.

What that means
A standard 4-ounce candle tin measures a little under 2.5 inches across the inside. That puts it squarely in the ECO 4 row on both US charts.
Small containers are where an oversized wick shows up fastest: the flame is large relative to the vessel, the glass gets hot, and the candle burns down in an evening.

What that means
The gap between CD 10 and CD 12 is roughly a quarter of an inch of container diameter. That sounds trivial and is not: a quarter inch is the difference between a full melt pool and a tunnel.
Buy the size below and the size above your target. Burn testing means comparing, and you cannot compare with one size in the drawer.

What that means
The booster is a second, narrower ribbon glued to the first. It gives the flame more fuel surface without widening the visible wick, which is the whole problem with wooden wicks in a low-melt wax.
If you tried a single wooden wick in soy and it drowned in its own melt pool, this is the fix the charts are pointing at.

What that means
Those two published figures cannot both be right for the same jar. One chart puts a half-inch wooden ribbon at up to 3 inches in soy; the other caps a comparable medium wick at 2.25 inches in soy and only allows 3 inches in paraffin.
The practical read: in pure soy, a wooden wick is likely to struggle in anything wider than about 2.5 inches without a booster. Buy the wick, but expect a burn test, and expect to need a second one.
Wooden wicks are also the wick most sensitive to fragrance load. A heavy oil load smothers them in a way it does not smother cotton.

The cotton wicks carry no series designation, which means the published charts do not apply to them and you are testing blind. That is the trade for the variety.
The wick holders alone are worth having. Keeping a wick centered while wax sets is the difference between a candle that burns evenly and one that eats one side of the jar.

What that means
Without a series designation there is no chart to look this wick up in, so you cannot predict its behavior. You can only burn one and see.
That is a genuine drawback and it is why we rank the series wicks above it. It is also honest about what most kit wicks are.
If you have a bag of unlabeled wicks already, do not throw them out. Burn one in your jar and note the melt pool; you are doing the same test you would do with a labeled wick, just without a head start.

Buy two sizes, not one
This is the most useful thing on the page. A burn test compares: you cannot tell whether a melt pool is right without having seen one that was wrong. Buy the size the chart gives you and the size above it, pour two identical candles, and burn them side by side for four hours.

The one we would skip
The unlabeled cotton wick packs, including the EricX Light pack above, are last on this list for one reason: without a series designation there is no chart to look them up in. They work, they are cheap, and if you already own a bag of them from a kit you should absolutely use them up. But if you are buying wicks to *fix* a candle that is tunneling, buying an unlabeled wick means changing a variable you cannot measure. That is not a purchase, it is a coin toss.
What else you need
Wick stickers and a centering device are not optional accessories, they are the difference between a wick that stays put and a candle that burns down one side. Most kits ship stickers and no holders. The DINGPAI holder and sticker pack in the picks above covers both for very little.
Once the candles exist, a wick trimmer matters more than it sounds: the published GW 464 instructions specify trimming to a quarter inch before each burn, and scissors cannot reach the bottom of a jar.

Common questions
What are the best wicks for soy candles?
ECO and CD series flat braided cotton, sized to your container diameter. ECO charts are published for soy directly, which makes them the easiest to size correctly on a first attempt. CD behaves similarly and is the more widely stocked of the two.
How many wicks do I need to buy?
At least a hundred, and in two adjacent sizes. Burn testing consumes wicks and comparison requires two sizes. A hundred-count pack of one size is the standard unit and costs very little.
Are wooden wicks better than cotton?
Different, not better. Wooden wicks give the crackle no cotton wick produces, and they are substantially harder to size correctly in soy - the two published charts disagree by a full size. Cotton is the reliable choice; wood is the one you buy for the sound.
Do I need pre-tabbed wicks?
Yes, unless you have a reason not to. A pre-tabbed wick has the metal sustainer already crimped on. Assembling them by hand is fiddly and buys you nothing at hobby volumes.
Can I reuse wicks?
No. A wick that has burned has already carbonized along its length and will not perform the same way again. They are consumables and they are cheap.
