Wicks and Wick Sizing
Best Wick Centering Tools and Wick Stickers
Two cheap tools, one job: a wick that is still in the middle when the wax sets. Ranked on the numbers the listings actually print.

It publishes no set time and no temperature limit, which is the trade. | Peeling the backing off without a fingernail |
An off-center wick is the most common cosmetic failure in a first batch and the cheapest one to prevent. The wick drifts while the wax is liquid, sets a quarter inch from the middle, and the candle burns down one side of the jar and stops. Every kit page on this site names centering devices as the part kits leave out; this is the page that ranks them.
It ranks them on what the listings publish. Holders are sold on adjectives, and the one figure that decides whether a bar fits your jar is its length. Stickers are sold as heat-resistant and double-sided, and exactly one listing in the category prints a set time and a temperature limit. We have not used these tools and we do not claim to have.
Two jobs, two tools
| Tool | Job | When it works |
|---|---|---|
| Wick sticker | Anchors the metal tab to the base of the container | Before the pour; it has to be set before wax touches it |
| Wick holder or bar | Holds the wick vertical and central while the surface sets | During the pour and until the top skins over |
| Placement tube | Drops a tabbed wick dead center in a deep jar and presses the sticker down | Before the pour, on a cold jar |
A sticker without a holder gives you a wick anchored at the bottom and leaning at the top. A holder without a sticker gives you a wick that is vertical until the melt pool floats the tab off the base on the first burn. You want both, and most kits ship only the stickers.
The number that decides fit
A bar rests on the rim. It has to be longer than the outside diameter of the jar or it falls in. That is the whole specification, and it is the one the listings print least prominently.
| Tool | Published figure | What that means for the jar |
|---|---|---|
| DINGPAI metal bars | 3.9 in long | Jars up to a little under 3.9 in outside |
| ABK metal bars | 4.1 in long | Jars up to a little under 4.1 in outside |
| Wooden 7-hole bars | 7.1 in long | Bowls and wide vessels; any jar on this site |
| HOUSEASSIST adjustable frame | Containers 1.5 to 4 in across, 3 in or taller | Most jars; not tins, short jars or molds, by its own statement |
| HygaLivia 3-wick holder | Containers up to 12 in across | Anything, including multi-wick bowls |
Past about 4 inches the question changes anyway. That is roughly where a single wick stops reaching the glass and the answer becomes two or three wicks, which is a different holder. Wick size chart covers the diameter side of that decision.
Sticker figures, and the two-hour rule
Every sticker here publishes the same size: 20 mm across, or close to it, and 1 mm thick. There is no meaningful size decision in this category. What one listing publishes and the rest do not is a procedure.
| Source | Set time before pouring | Maximum wax temperature |
|---|---|---|
| SANNIX sticker listing | Two hours | 212F |
| HOUSEASSIST holder listing | 10 seconds, before removing the tool | Not published |
| Aubeco, DINGPAI, ABK listings | Not published | Not published |
| Published GW 464 wax instructions, for comparison | n/a | Never heat above 200F; pour at 140F |
Two hours and ten seconds are both printed by makers, and they are not describing the same thing: one is the adhesive curing to the glass, the other is how long to hold the wick before lifting a frame off it. The honest reading is that the sticker wants time and the tool wants patience, and that a wick pressed on and poured over a minute later is the usual reason a tab floats loose in the melt pool.
The 212F ceiling sits above the 200F the published GW 464 instructions say never to exceed, so a candle poured to the wax maker's figures stays inside the sticker maker's. Pour at the published 140F and the sticker has seventy degrees of margin.
Heat, and the plastic tools
Metal bars do not care about wax temperature. Plastic holders sit above a pour at 140F and a fragrance addition at 170F, and only one of them says what that does to it.
- HygaLivia publishes a heat deflection temperature of 189F for its ABS holders, and states that ABS resists heat better than common PLA tools. That is a competitor's claim about a material and we repeat it as one.
- HOUSEASSIST describes its frame as heat-resistant plastic that withstands contact with warm wax, with no figure.
- Wick Set Go is PLA and publishes no heat figure. It is used before the pour on a cold jar, which is why that matters less for it than it would for a holder.
A published 189F against a published 140F pour is a comfortable margin. What it is not is a margin against the 170F to 180F the wax is heated to before fragrance goes in, so keep plastic holders out of the pot and on the rim, which is where they belong anyway.
How we picked
- A published length or container span. The figure that decides fit. Every holder in the picks publishes one.
- Published sticker figures: size, thickness, set time, temperature limit. One listing has all four.
- Published exclusions. A maker that says what its tool does not fit is telling you more than one that says it fits everything. One holder here does, and it is ranked for it.
- A heat figure on plastic tools, where one exists.
- Brand and model that match the title. One adjustable frame's catalog model field names a wax melting pot its title explicitly excludes, and it was left out for that alone.
- Count that matches the job. Twenty holders is a session; two is a test. Both are on the list, for different buyers.
The full method, including what we do and do not claim, is on how we pick.

Top pick · The only holder here that publishes what it fits, in numbers
HygaLivia 3-Wick Centering Tool, 2 Pack with 88 Stickers
HygaLivia
Publishes its slot width, the largest wick it takes, the widest container it spans and the temperature its plastic softens at. Nothing else in this category comes close to that, and it holds one wick or three.

- Thin wicks
- Listing says to slide thin wicks into the narrow side of the slotSource: Amazon Creators API item data, read 2026-09-18
What that means
A heat deflection temperature is the figure a plastic tool ought to publish and almost never does. At 189F it sits comfortably above the 140F the published GW 464 instructions give as a pour temperature, and above the 170F they give for adding fragrance.
The listing also states outright that ABS resists heat better than the PLA common in 3D-printed tools. That is a competitor's claim about a material, and we are repeating it as one; the magnetic tube in these picks is PLA.
Three-wick capability matters more than it sounds. Past about 4 inches of container diameter the honest answer is more than one wick, and this is the only holder here built for that.
Good
- Publishes slot size, wick capacity, container span and a heat figure
- Holds one wick or three, and spans containers up to 12 in
- Two holders plus 88 stickers in two sizes
Less good
- Two holders is a small session; a metal-bar pack gives you twenty
- The most expensive item in these picks
- 3D-printed, so finish is not what a stamped metal bar looks like
Skip this one if
You pour a dozen single-wick jars at a time. Two holders means two candles setting while the rest wait, and a 20-pack of metal bars is the right tool for that.

Pick 2 · One reusable frame for every jar between 1.5 and 4 inches
HOUSEASSIST Adjustable Tall Wick Centering Tool
HOUSEASSIST
An adjustable frame that clips the wick at the top, with a published container range and, unusually, a published list of what it does not fit. It also contradicts itself about its own height, which we print rather than resolve.

- Published tip
- Use a high-tack sticker and let it set 10 seconds before removing the toolSource: Amazon Creators API item data, read 2026-09-18
What that means
The listing is called the tall version, supports a 6 inch wick in its title, and gives a 6 inch tool height for containers 3 to 6 inches tall. A later bullet on the same page states the tool is 5.0 inches tall and suits wicks of 5 inches or less. Both cannot be true; check the listing before ordering for a tall jar.
The exclusions are the useful part. Most centering tools claim to fit everything. This one says no to short jars, shallow tins and pillar molds, which is exactly where a frame that sits over the rim stops working.
The 10-second set time it publishes is the shortest sticker guidance in these picks by a wide margin; a sticker maker in the same picks says two hours.
Good
- Publishes a container range and a list of what it does not fit
- One reusable frame instead of a consumable per candle
- Washable plastic, and a published sticker set-time tip
Less good
- Title and one bullet disagree on whether the tool is 5 or 6 inches tall
- One candle at a time; the frame moves to the next jar only after the wax skins
- Does not fit tins, short jars or molds, by its own account
Skip this one if
You pour into tins or squat jars under 3 inches tall. The listing says it does not fit them, and a metal bar across the rim does.

Pick 3 · Keeping the wick where you put it
DINGPAI 20 Candle Wick Holders and 180 Wick Stickers
DINGPAI
The cheapest fix for the most common cosmetic failure in a first batch. A wick that drifts off-center while the wax sets gives you a candle that burns down one side of the jar and stops.

What that means
Kits usually include a handful of stickers and no holders at all. The holder is the part that keeps the wick vertical and centered for the twenty minutes it takes the surface to skin over.
Twenty holders means you can pour twenty candles in a session rather than pouring two and waiting.
Good
- Solves off-center wicks completely
- 180 stickers is a real supply
- Reusable metal, not a consumable
Less good
- Not needed if your kit already included holders
- Only fits jars within the holders' span
Skip this one if
Your kit shipped centering devices already. These do exactly the same job.

Pick 4 · The longest metal bar here, for wider jars
ABK 36 Metal Wick Holders with 40 Wick Stickers
ABK
A stainless bar a fifth of an inch longer than the standard pattern, with a cross-shaped slot instead of a plain hole. Small differences, and both of them are the ones that matter when a jar is on the wide side.

- Sticker size
- Not published on the listing
What that means
A metal bar has to rest on both sides of the rim, so its length is the largest jar it can center. At 4.1 inches this spans a jar a little over 4 inches across at the outside, which is roughly where a single wick stops being the right answer anyway.
A cross-shaped slot grips a wick at two angles rather than one, which is the difference between a wick that stays vertical and one that leans while the surface sets.
Thirty-six holders is a full session or two, and the 40 stickers are a starter quantity rather than a supply.
Good
- Longest metal bar in these picks, at a published 4.1 in
- Cross-shaped slot for a firmer grip on the wick
- 36 holders covers a large batch in one pour
Less good
- 40 stickers run out long before 36 holders wear out
- Sticker size is not published
- A bar cannot hold a wick in a container wider than itself
Skip this one if
Your containers are wider than about 4 inches. A bar has to reach both sides of the rim, and past that width you want the wooden 7 inch bars or a multi-wick holder.

Pick 5 · Wide containers, off-center wicks and multi-wick layouts
Wooden 7-Hole Wick Centering Bars, 50 Pack
Fyntave
Seven inches of wood with seven holes along it. It spans containers a metal bar cannot reach, it places a wick anywhere along its length rather than only in the middle, and it doubles as a stirring stick.

- Hole diameter
- Not published on the listing
What that means
Seven holes across seven inches is what lets you set two or three wicks in a wide bowl at a chosen spacing, which a single-slot metal bar cannot do at all.
Wood is not stainless: wax that gets onto the bar stays on it. Fifty in a pack tells you how the maker expects them to be used, as a batch tool rather than a lifetime one.
The listing does not publish the hole diameter, so whether a thick wooden wick or a large sustainer tab passes through is something you find out on the bench.
Good
- Spans wide containers that metal bars cannot
- Seven positions per bar, so multi-wick spacing is possible
- Fifty in the pack, and they double as stirrers
Less good
- Hole diameter is not published
- Wood rather than stainless, so wax on the bar stays on the bar
- A round hole locates a wick; a slot grips it
Skip this one if
You want a wick held rigidly vertical in a narrow jar. A slotted stainless bar grips harder; a wooden bar with a round hole mostly locates.

Pick 6 · Pressing a wooden wick's clip down in the center of a deep jar
Wick Set Go Magnetic Wick Placement Tube, Wooden Wick
Wick Set Go
A different job from the holders. A magnet in a 7 inch tube picks up a wooden wick by its metal clip, drops it dead center through a deep jar and presses the sticker down where your fingers cannot reach. Made from PLA, which the ABS holder in these picks says softens sooner.

- Heat tolerance
- Not published on the listing
What that means
The problem this solves is the one the holders do not: getting the sticker pressed firmly onto the base of a tall, narrow jar. A wick placed by hand in a 5 inch jar is usually placed by guesswork.
This is the wooden-wick variant of the tube. The same seller lists a string-wick version of the identical tool, and that one is currently unavailable, so wooden wicks are the version you can actually buy today.
It does nothing to keep the wick vertical while the wax sets. You still want a holder across the rim after this has done its job, which is why it is ranked with the holders rather than instead of them.
PLA is the material most 3D-printed tools use, and the ABS holder in these picks publishes a heat figure precisely to distinguish itself from it. This tool is used before the pour, on a cold jar, so that matters less here than it would on a holder.
Good
- Places and presses a wooden wick in the center of a deep jar
- Works with any wick length
- Made in the USA, stated
Less good
- Does not hold the wick upright during the pour; you still need a holder
- This variant is sold for wooden wicks, so tabbed cotton wicks are the wrong job for it
- No published heat tolerance for the PLA
- Stock is thin; the listing showed single-figure units when we checked
Skip this one if
You pour into short, wide containers. You can reach the base with a finger, and the tube solves a problem you do not have.

Pick 7 · The sticker that publishes a set time and a temperature limit
SANNIX Candle Wick Stickers, 20 mm, 400 Pack
SANNIX
Diameter, thickness, a set time before pouring and a maximum wax temperature, all on one listing. That is every figure a wick sticker can publish, and the set time is two hours, which is not what most people do.

- 400Source: Amazon Creators API item data, read 2026-09-18
What that means
Two hours is the honest number nobody wants. A sticker pressed on and poured over a minute later is the usual reason a wick floats loose in the pool, and this listing says so in its own way.
The 212F ceiling sits above the 200F the published GW 464 instructions say never to exceed, so a candle poured to the wax maker's figures stays inside the sticker maker's.
Twenty millimeters matches the round tab on most pre-tabbed wicks: the ECO 12 wicks in our beeswax picks publish a 0.79 in tab diameter, which is exactly this size.
Good
- Publishes diameter, thickness, set time and temperature limit
- 400 is a real supply at one per candle
- Temperature limit sits above the published wax ceiling
Less good
- No pull tab, so the backing takes a fingernail
- The two-hour set time is real and it slows a session down
- 20 mm may overhang a small votive tab
Skip this one if
You want a sticker you can peel one-handed while holding a wick. The tailed version in these picks costs the same and does that.

Pick 8 · Peeling the backing off without a fingernail
Aubeco Candle Wick Stickers with Pull Tail, 720 Pack
Aubeco
The same size and thickness as the SANNIX, nearly twice the count, and a tab that extends past the sticker so the backing peels in one motion. It publishes no set time and no temperature limit, which is the trade.

What that means
The tail is the whole product. Foam stickers without one are peeled with a fingernail, one at a time, and a session of twenty candles is where you start to resent that.
Same 20 mm and 1 mm as every other sticker here. There is no meaningful size choice in this category; the choice is tail or no tail, and count.
Without a published set time you are working from the SANNIX figure of two hours, which is the only one published in these picks.
Good
- Pull tail, so the backing comes off in one motion
- 720 is the largest count here for the price
- Same published size and thickness as the alternatives
Less good
- No published set time or temperature limit
- Foam adhesive, like every sticker here, can lift if pressed on a dusty base
- Tail has to be trimmed or tucked if it shows through a clear jar
Skip this one if
You want every figure published. The SANNIX prints a set time and a temperature ceiling and this does not.
Centering a wick, in the order the published figures suggest
- Clean and dry the base of the jar. Foam adhesive on dust is the sticker failure nobody blames on dust.
- Sticker on the tab, tab on the base, pressed hard. In a deep jar, a placement tube presses it where a finger cannot.
- Wait. The one published set time is two hours. If you pour sooner, that is a decision rather than the instruction.
- Bar or frame across the rim, wick through the slot, wick vertical. Pull it gently taut; a slack wick sets with a lean.
- Pour at the wax's published temperature, 140F for GW 464, which keeps you well inside the sticker's published 212F.
- Leave the holder on until the surface has skinned. Take it off early and the wick has nothing holding it while the wax is still soft.
- Trim after the candle has set, to the published quarter inch, and not before. Best wick trimmers covers the tool.
Wide containers and more than one wick
Two of the tools here exist for the container a single bar cannot serve. The wooden 7-hole bars are 7.1 inches long with seven positions, so two or three wicks can be set at a chosen spacing. The HygaLivia holder is built for one wick or three and publishes a 12 inch span.
Spacing is where multi-wick candles go wrong. Too close and the pools merge into one overheated center; too far and the edges never melt. No listing here publishes a spacing rule and neither do the wick charts we transcribe, so a multi-wick candle is a burn test before it is anything else. Wick burn testing is the procedure.
What we left out, and why
- A 5 inch HOUSEASSIST frame whose catalog model field reads as a 32 oz wax melting pot while its title says no melting pot is included. Brand and model must match the title before we feature a product, and this one did not. Its tall sibling is in the picks, with its own inconsistency printed.
- A NICECHEF adjustable frame that claims to fit everything from tealights to pillar molds and publishes no height. The HOUSEASSIST listing for the same design says it fits none of those, and we ranked the maker that says no.
- A magnetic snap-on setter that publishes no dimensions, no container range and no material figure. It may be excellent; there is nothing on the listing to rank it on.
- A 400-count foam sticker that converts 20 mm to 0.97 inches. Twenty millimeters is 0.79 inches. A listing that gets its only measurement wrong is not one we cite for measurements.
- A 21-count EricX bar pack that publishes the same 3.9 inch length as the DINGPAI set already in the picks. Nothing wrong with it; it would have been a duplicate row.
Do you need any of this
If your kit shipped centering devices, no. Look in the box before you order: what comes in a candle making kit lists what usually does and does not. Most include a handful of stickers and no holders, which is the combination that produces the leaning wick.
If you are buying supplies separately, yes, and it is the cheapest line on the equipment list. Twenty metal bars are a permanent purchase. Stickers are a consumable at one per candle, and the counts here run from 40 to 720.
What we would buy
For a maker pouring single-wick jars in batches: the DINGPAI set, twenty stainless bars and 180 stickers, with the 3.9 inch published length checked against the outside of your jars first.
For anyone whose containers vary, or who wants one tool that publishes everything: the HygaLivia holder. Slot width, wick capacity, container span and a heat figure, plus 88 stickers in two sizes. Two holders is the limit, and it is the right limit for a maker who pours a few at a time.
For stickers alone: the SANNIX 400, because it is the only listing that tells you how long to wait and how hot is too hot. Or the tailed Aubeco 720 if you value peeling them one-handed more than the printed figures. A centering tool holds the top of the wick and a tab holds the bottom. For that part, best wick tabs covers which diameter suits a tealight and which suits a jar.

Common questions
What is the best wick centering tool?
For batches of single-wick jars, a 20-pack of stainless bars with stickers, checked against the outside diameter of your jars, since the bars publish 3.9 inches. For a tool that publishes every figure, the HygaLivia holder: 3.5 mm slots, wicks up to 48-ply, containers up to 12 inches and a 189F heat deflection temperature.
How do wick stickers work?
A double-sided foam dot goes between the wick's metal tab and the base of the container. Every sticker here publishes 20 mm across and 1 mm thick. One listing also publishes the procedure: press it on, wait two hours, then pour wax no hotter than 212F.
How long should a wick sticker set before pouring?
The only published figure is two hours, from the SANNIX listing. A holder maker separately publishes 10 seconds, but that is how long to hold the wick before lifting its frame off, not how long the adhesive takes to bond to the glass.
Why does my wick float up when I pour?
The sticker was not set, the base was not clean, or the wax was hotter than the adhesive's published limit. The one sticker here that publishes figures says two hours to set and a 212F ceiling, and the published GW 464 pour temperature of 140F is well inside that.
What size wick holder do I need?
Longer than the outside diameter of your jar, because a bar rests on the rim. The metal bars here publish 3.9 and 4.1 inches; the wooden bars publish 7.1 inches. Measure the outside of the jar, not the inside a wick chart uses.
Can I use a clothespin or chopsticks to center a wick?
People do, and we have no published figures to compare them on, so we are not going to claim a bar does better. What a slotted bar gives you is a grip that keeps the wick vertical rather than merely resting against it.
How do I center a wick in a tall jar?
With a placement tool that reaches the base. The magnetic tube here is 7 inches long, picks up a wooden wick by its metal base, and presses the sticker down in the center where a finger cannot. It does not hold the wick upright afterward; you still want a bar across the rim.
