A wax melt is a small block of scented wax with no wick, melted in a warmer. Everything else is the same as a candle: same wax, same fragrance oil, same load arithmetic.
That makes this a genuinely close comparison, and one worth understanding if you are making things for other people. A household with a toddler or a cat often wants the melt.

Why melts often throw better
A candle releases fragrance from the surface of its melt pool, and that pool is a fraction of the candle. A wax melt has its entire mass liquid at once, so the whole thing is releasing fragrance at the same time.
The other factor is that a melt is not burning. In a candle, some fragrance is consumed by the flame rather than released into the room. A melt loses none of it that way.
Making melts from the same supplies
If you already have wax and fragrance oil, you can make melts today with no additional purchase except a mold, and a silicone ice cube tray works.
- Weigh the wax. A standard clamshell holds about 2.5 to 3 oz, so a pound makes five or six.
- Melt to the wax's published range, 170 to 180F for GW 464.
- Add fragrance at 170F, at the same percentage load you would use for a candle. Stir two minutes.
- Cool to the published pour temperature and pour into the mold.
- Let it set completely, then pop out.
- Cure the same as a candle: one to two weeks for soy.
One useful difference: melts can go slightly above the load you would use in a candle in some waxes, because there is no wick to saturate. Stay within the wax's published maximum regardless - past that the oil separates whatever it is going into.

What that means
Two suppliers publish slightly different melt points for the same wax, 115 to 120F and 113 to 118F. That two-degree gap is normal for a natural wax and it is why you read your own pour temperature rather than trusting a single number.
Ten pounds is 160 ounces of wax, or roughly forty 4-ounce candles at the usual fill. That is a real supply, not a sample.
464 is a soy blend with additives that reduce frosting and hold fragrance better than straight soy. It is not the most natural wax on the shelf and it is not sold as one.

What that means
Named scents matter more than they look. Kit fragrance oils are usually unlabeled, so when one of your candles turns out well you have no way to make it again.
The listing does not publish a recommended fragrance load, so use the wax maker's figure instead. Golden Wax 464 publishes a 10 percent maximum, and most makers land between 6 and 8 percent.
Forest Pine and Harvest Spice are the two that hold up at a high load. Vanilla in soy tends to discolor the wax to a cream over a few weeks, which is a cosmetic issue rather than a fault.

What that means
Four ounces of fragrance at an 8 percent load scents about 50 ounces of wax, which is roughly six 8-ounce candles. A sampler bottle does not get you a batch; this does.
Woody-amber fragrances are the most forgiving family in wax. They carry through the cure, they survive a high pour temperature, and they do not discolor soy the way vanilla does.

Which wax for melts
Container soy works and is what most home makers use. Its low melt point is an advantage here: the warmer does not have to work hard.
The one thing to watch is that a very soft container soy can be difficult to pop out of a mold intact. If yours crumbles, a firmer soy such as GW 444 or a small amount of a harder wax in the blend fixes it.
Running cost
Those burn and warm times are general figures rather than published specifications, and they vary with the warmer and the wick. The direction is reliable even if the numbers are approximate: melts stretch a pound of wax further.
Which to choose
- You want the flame: candle. Nothing substitutes for it and this is a completely sufficient reason.
- You want the strongest scent for the least effort: melts.
- Small children or pets in the house: melts on an electric warmer.
- You are learning candle making: candles. The wick is the skill.
- Making gifts: candles read as gifts more readily, but a set of melts with a warmer is a genuinely good present.
- You like changing scents often: melts. Swapping takes a minute.

Common questions
Do wax melts smell stronger than candles?
Often, yes. A melt has its entire mass liquid at once, so the whole block is releasing fragrance, while a candle releases only from its melt pool. A melt also loses no fragrance to a flame.
Can I make wax melts with candle wax?
Yes, with the same wax and the same fragrance load. A silicone mold or an ice cube tray works. A very soft container soy can be hard to pop out intact, in which case a firmer soy helps.
Are wax melts cheaper than candles?
Per scented hour, generally yes, because there is no wick and the whole block is used. A pound of wax makes about six melts against about two 8-ounce candles.
Do wax melts need to cure?
Yes, the same as candles. Soy needs one to two weeks for the fragrance to bind, whether it is going into a jar or a mold.
Are wax melts safer than candles?
On an electric warmer there is no open flame, which removes the main fire risk. A tealight-powered warmer still has one.
