How Many Wicks Does a Candle Need?

The published charts stop at about 4 inches. This is what to do when your container is wider than the chart.

Jars around 2.5 to 3 inches across

Almost every wick question on this site is answered by a published chart. This one is not, and it is worth being clear about why: the charts simply stop. Knowing where they stop is most of the answer.

Where the published data ends

We transcribe four published wick charts. Read their largest rows and a boundary appears.

The rule of thumb, and what it rests on

Wick count by container diameter
Inside diameterWicksWhy
Under 2 in1Well inside every published chart
2 to 3 in1The heart of the published rows
3 to 4 in1Still on the charts, at the large end
4 to 5 in2Past the published rows; two smaller pools beat one oversized one
Over 5 in3Same logic again

Measure the inside diameter, not the outside and not the volume in ounces. A candle's wick is decided by how far the heat has to travel across the surface, which is a diameter question. How to choose a wick size covers the measurement itself.

Size down when you add a wick

This is the part people get wrong. Two wicks of the size you would have used for the whole jar will overheat it. Each wick in a multi-wick candle is serving a fraction of the surface, so each one is smaller than the single-wick answer would have been.

Spacing: the figure nobody publishes

We looked. None of the four published charts we transcribe gives a spacing rule for multi-wick candles, and none of the wick or holder listings in our picks publishes one either.

  • Too close together and the two pools merge early into one overheated center, which is the failure mode that cracks glass.
  • Too far apart and each wick tunnels its own well while the wax at the rim never melts.
  • The practical approach is to space them evenly around a circle at roughly half the radius from the center, then burn-test for four hours and look at whether the pools have joined and reached the glass.

That middle figure is a starting point, not a published rule, and we are labeling it as ours. Wick burn testing is the procedure that settles it, and it matters more here than on any single-wick candle.

What you need to hold three wicks straight

A single-slot metal bar cannot position three wicks. Two tools in our picks can, and they publish the figures that matter.

  • A three-wick holder with published slot sizes and a published container span, which is the only holder we found built for one wick or three.
  • Seven-hole wooden bars at a published 7.1 inches long, which let you place wicks at a chosen spacing across a container wider than any metal bar will span.

The full comparison, including the published lengths that decide whether a bar reaches across your jar at all, is on best wick centering tools.

Is a three-wick candle worth making

Three honest reasons to say no before you commit a wide container to it.

  1. It burns three times the wax per hour. A wide three-wick candle is not a long-lasting candle, it is a fast one with a big pool.
  2. It triples the failure modes. Three wicks that are each slightly too large is a hot container rather than a cosmetic problem.
  3. There is no published chart to start from. Everything above is derived from where the single-wick charts stop.

A 3-inch jar with one correctly sized wick is an easier, cheaper and better-documented candle than a 5-inch jar with three. If this is your first batch, the wick size chart and a narrow container is the route we would take.

Not published on the listing
Published soy row
ECO 14 rated to 3.75 in for soy containersSource: Lone Star Candle Supply ECO chart

What that means

Our derived beeswax table puts a 3.25-inch beeswax container at ECO 14 on the plus-two reading, and a 3.5-inch one at ECO 14 to 16.

This is the largest ECO size we stock, and it is where a wide beeswax candle ends up. Beyond about 4 inches the honest answer is two wicks rather than one larger one.

The listing publishes nothing about diameter, so everything above comes from the published chart rather than from the seller.

Good

  • Sold by a candle supply company we stock elsewhere on the site
  • Pre-waxed and pre-tabbed
  • The top of the range the beeswax derivation reaches

Less good

  • No published container diameter at all
  • No published thickness or tab size
  • A large wick is the dangerous direction to guess in

Skip this one if

Your container is under 3 inches. This is the widest ECO we stock and oversizing a wick overheats the container rather than just wasting wax.

Published soy row for comparison
ECO 12 rated to 3.5 in for soy containersSource: Lone Star Candle Supply ECO chart

What that means

The seller publishes 2 to 3 inches and Lone Star's chart rates ECO 12 up to 3.5 inches. That half-inch gap is the same disagreement this series shows on every listing we have read, and it is why we print both figures.

For beeswax, the derivation on our beeswax chart puts a 3.0-inch container at ECO 10 to 12, which is where this sits.

Eight inches is longer than the 6-inch wicks common in this series, which suits a deep jar and means trimming the excess on a shallow one.

Good

  • Publishes a thickness as well as a container range
  • The size the beeswax derivation calls for at 3 inches
  • Pre-waxed and pre-tabbed, so nothing to prepare

Less good

  • Seller range and published chart row differ by half an inch
  • 8 inches is long for shallow tins and needs trimming
  • No published tab diameter, unlike some ECO listings

Skip this one if

You are pouring soy at this diameter. In soy the published chart puts a 3-inch jar nearer ECO 10, and this is the beeswax answer rather than the soy one.

Thin wicks
Listing says to slide thin wicks into the narrow side of the slotSource: Amazon Creators API item data, read 2026-09-18

What that means

A heat deflection temperature is the figure a plastic tool ought to publish and almost never does. At 189F it sits comfortably above the 140F the published GW 464 instructions give as a pour temperature, and above the 170F they give for adding fragrance.

The listing also states outright that ABS resists heat better than the PLA common in 3D-printed tools. That is a competitor's claim about a material, and we are repeating it as one; the magnetic tube in these picks is PLA.

Three-wick capability matters more than it sounds. Past about 4 inches of container diameter the honest answer is more than one wick, and this is the only holder here built for that.

Good

  • Publishes slot size, wick capacity, container span and a heat figure
  • Holds one wick or three, and spans containers up to 12 in
  • Two holders plus 88 stickers in two sizes

Less good

  • Two holders is a small session; a metal-bar pack gives you twenty
  • The most expensive item in these picks
  • 3D-printed, so finish is not what a stamped metal bar looks like

Skip this one if

You pour a dozen single-wick jars at a time. Two holders means two candles setting while the rest wait, and a 20-pack of metal bars is the right tool for that.

Not published on the listing

What that means

Seven holes across seven inches is what lets you set two or three wicks in a wide bowl at a chosen spacing, which a single-slot metal bar cannot do at all.

Wood is not stainless: wax that gets onto the bar stays on it. Fifty in a pack tells you how the maker expects them to be used, as a batch tool rather than a lifetime one.

The listing does not publish the hole diameter, so whether a thick wooden wick or a large sustainer tab passes through is something you find out on the bench.

Good

  • Spans wide containers that metal bars cannot
  • Seven positions per bar, so multi-wick spacing is possible
  • Fifty in the pack, and they double as stirrers

Less good

  • Hole diameter is not published
  • Wood rather than stainless, so wax on the bar stays on the bar
  • A round hole locates a wick; a slot grips it

Skip this one if

You want a wick held rigidly vertical in a narrow jar. A slotted stainless bar grips harder; a wooden bar with a round hole mostly locates.

Alternative published range
up to 2.76 inchesSource: Wedo metric ECO chart

What that means

The two published ranges above disagree by nearly half an inch for the same wick, and both are printed by people who sell it. That is not an error on anyone's part; the US charts are soy-adjusted and the Wedo chart covers soy and paraffin together.

Practically: if you are in a 3-inch soy jar and you use the US charts, ECO 10 is the starting wick. If you use Wedo's, you want ECO 14 in the same jar. Test both.

The paper filaments in an ECO wick make it curl and self-trim, in the same way CD does. Both are coreless, so there is no metal or zinc in the flame.

Good

  • Charts published for soy directly, not adjusted from paraffin
  • Coreless and self-trimming
  • The series most commonly stocked with soy kits

Less good

  • Published guidance varies by up to two sizes between suppliers
  • Needs a size up again in beeswax

Skip this one if

You are burning paraffin. The LX and zinc charts are the ones written for it, and an ECO sized for soy will be too large.

CD 12 Pre-Tabbed Candle Wicks for Soy Candles, 100 pcs product photo

CD 12 Pre-Tabbed Candle Wicks for Soy Candles, 100 pcs

Published range (soy)
2.5 to 3 inch containersSource: Tools for Makers CD soy chart

What that means

CD wicks curl as they burn, which trims the tip and reduces the mushroom of carbon that builds on a straight wick. That self-trimming behavior is the whole reason the series exists.

The published charts disagree on CD for soy by up to two sizes, because Lone Star prints CD against base paraffin and tells you to size up one to three for soy. Our chart shows both readings side by side.

Good

  • One size, 100 of them, so you can run a proper burn test
  • Self-trimming curl reduces mushrooming
  • Pre-tabbed, so no assembly

Less good

  • Wrong size for a 4-inch jar and wrong size for a votive
  • CD in beeswax needs a different size again

Skip this one if

You do not yet know your container diameter. Measure the inside of the jar first, then buy the size the chart gives you.

What to buy for a multi-wick pour

For a 4 to 5 inch container: two wicks sized near the published row for half the diameter, which in practice means starting around ECO 10 to ECO 12 rather than the ECO 16 a single wick would need. Buy both sizes and burn them.

For anything over 5 inches: three wicks and the seven-hole wooden bars, because no metal bar spans that jar.

And whichever you choose, run the four-hour burn before you pour a batch. There is no published chart behind any of this, and a burn test is the only thing that turns the arithmetic above into an answer.

How these picks were made. Published specifications compiled from the sources listed below, the arithmetic shown on the page, and live Amazon prices. No product here has been burned by us. Read the method.

Common questions

How many wicks does a candle need?

One up to about 4 inches of inside diameter, two from 4 to 5 inches, three above that. The boundary comes from the published charts: the largest row any of the four we transcribe prints is 4.0 inches, so past that you are off the published data.

What size wick for a 3-wick candle?

Smaller than the single-wick answer for that jar. Each wick serves a fraction of the surface, so start near the published row for a container about half the diameter and burn-test. There is no published multi-wick chart.

How far apart should wicks be in a candle?

No publisher we transcribe prints a spacing rule. As a starting point, space them evenly around a circle at roughly half the radius from the center, then run a four-hour burn and check whether the pools joined and reached the glass. That figure is ours, not a published one.

Can I use two wicks instead of one bigger one?

Past about 4 inches that is the recommended route, because a single wick large enough for a wide pool gives a flame taller than candle safety guidance allows and a container too hot to hold.

Do 3-wick candles burn faster?

Yes. Three flames consume roughly three times the wax per hour of one. A three-wick candle is a bigger melt pool and a shorter life, not a longer one.

How do you keep three wicks centered while the wax sets?

With a holder built for it. A single-slot metal bar positions one wick; the three-wick holder in our picks publishes a 12-inch container span and 3.5 mm slots, and seven-hole wooden bars at a published 7.1 inches let you set your own spacing.

Why does my multi-wick candle tunnel at the edges?

The wicks are too small, too far apart, or both, so each melts its own well and the rim never liquefies. Size up one step or move them closer, and give the first burn long enough to reach the glass.
