Jars are sold by capacity because that is what a shopper compares. The candle does not care about capacity. It cares about the diameter of the surface the melt pool has to cross, and about nothing else.
Why diameter and not capacity
A wick has a maximum distance it can project enough heat to melt. That distance is a radius. Capacity is a volume, and the same volume can be short and wide or tall and narrow.

Where two wicks start
Around 4 inches of internal diameter. Below that, a correctly sized single wick will reach the wall. Above it, no single wick reaches the edge without running the center far too hot.
Two wicks in a jar under 4 inches is a common and expensive mistake: the two pools merge immediately into one overheated pool, the container gets hot, and you have made a candle that burns down in an evening.
Burn time
The practical consequence: a wider candle burns down faster than a narrow one of the same capacity, because it is melting more surface per hour.

What that means
Seven fluid ounces of container takes roughly 5.6 ounces of soy wax by weight, at the 0.8 fill factor soy runs at. Sixteen jars is therefore about 5.6 pounds of wax - close to a 5 lb bag plus what stays in the pot.
The listing does not publish an internal diameter, and diameter is what the wick chart needs. Measure across the inside of the glass with a ruler before you order wicks.
Thick glass matters for a real reason: thin glass near a large flame is a crack risk, and a cracked candle jar is a fire.

Standard 8-ounce candle jars usually measure close to 3 inches inside, which on the US soy charts is ECO 10 or CD 14 to 16 territory. Measure yours rather than trusting that.

What that means
Metal conducts heat, so a tin runs hotter at the rim than glass does at the same wick size. That usually means a slightly smaller wick than the same diameter in glass.
Tins cannot crack. That makes them the safer vessel for a first burn test with a wick you are not sure about.
You cannot see the melt pool, which is the price of the safety and the cost.

What that means
Capacity and diameter are different things. A tall narrow 10-ounce jar wicks like a 3-inch candle; a squat wide one may need two wicks. Measure the diameter, not the volume.
Clear glass lets you watch the melt pool reach the edge, which is exactly what you are checking on a burn test.

Pick one size and stay with it
The single most useful thing a new maker can do is choose one jar size and make twenty candles in it. One diameter means one wick size, which means your burn tests actually compare to each other and your results accumulate.
Mixed sizes are why kit candles are inconsistent: one wick across three diameters cannot be right. Buy sixteen of one jar rather than four of four.

Common questions
What size jar is best for candles?
Seven or eight fluid ounces, around 2.75 to 3 inches internal diameter. That range sits in the middle of every published wick chart, so sizing a wick for it is unambiguous.
Does jar size affect wick size?
Diameter does, decisively. Capacity does not. A tall 10-ounce jar and a squat 10-ounce jar can be three wick sizes apart.
When do I need two wicks?
Past about 4 inches of internal diameter. Below that, a correctly sized single wick reaches the wall; two wicks in a narrow jar produce one overheated pool.
How long does an 8 oz candle burn?
Roughly 13 to 16 hours for a typical single-wick soy candle, based on a general burn rate of about 0.4 to 0.5 ounces per hour. Wick size and fragrance load both shift it.
How do I measure a candle jar's diameter?
Across the inside of the container at the level the wax will sit, in inches. Not the outside, not the lid, and not the capacity in ounces.
