Candle Wax
American Soy Organics Review
Four grades, one brand, and a working sequence published on every one of them. The question is which grade, and in what size.

American Soy Organics is the other name you meet when you start buying soy wax in the United States, the one that is not Golden Brands. It is an Iowa maker selling four named grades, and unlike most of this category it puts a working sequence on the listing for every one of them.
We have not burned these waxes and we do not claim to have. What follows is every figure the four listings publish, checked against each other, with the two places the brand's own numbers answer a question people usually guess at.
The four grades, as published
| Grade | Melt point | Heat to | Pour at | Max fragrance load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freedom | 115 to 121F | 160F | Not separately published | 10 percent, 1.6 oz per lb |
| Freedom Coconut | 115 to 121F | 160F | Not separately published | 10 percent, 1.6 oz per lb |
| Freedom Pillar | 142 to 146F | 190F | 150 to 170F | 10 percent, 1.6 oz per lb |
| Millennium | Not published | 160F | 115F | 12 percent, 1.9 oz per lb |
Read down the melt point column first. Three of the four publish one, and the one that does not is the most expensive grade in the range. Read across the bottom row second: Millennium is the only grade that publishes a pour temperature for a container wax, and the only one with a ceiling above 10 percent.
Freedom and Freedom Coconut publish the same melt point
This is the single most useful thing on the page, because it settles a question the wider internet gets wrong. The coconut blend publishes 115 to 121F. The plain soy publishes 115 to 121F. They are the same range, from the same maker, on the same day.
The coconut listing goes further and says so itself: it describes the blend as performing just like Freedom Soy Wax. The maker is not claiming a thermal difference between its soy and its coconut soy, so you should not expect one either.
That has a practical consequence. If you are switching from Freedom to Freedom Coconut you do not need to relearn your temperatures, and the brand recommends the same CD or ECO wick series for both. You should still burn-test, because fragrance release changes how a wick behaves, but you are not starting over.
Millennium: a higher ceiling, locked behind a case
Millennium is a blend of soy and botanical waxes, formulated for color retention and reduced frosting, and it publishes a 12 percent maximum fragrance load against 10 percent everywhere else in the range. That is a fifth more fragrance by weight.
The catch is the quantity. Millennium is the only grade here sold exclusively in a 45 lb case, which is 720 ounces, or roughly 112 eight-ounce candles. The brand's highest fragrance ceiling is behind its largest minimum order, and there is no small bag to test it with first.
It is also the only grade with no published melt point, which is an odd omission on the most expensive product in the line. You get a heat-to figure of 160F and a pour figure of 115F and you are expected to work between them without knowing where the wax actually solidifies.
Freedom Pillar, and the gap that matters
Freedom Pillar publishes 142 to 146F against Freedom's 115 to 121F. That is roughly a twenty-seven degree gap and it is the entire difference between a candle that stands up out of a mold and one that slumps in a warm room.
It is also the grade with the most complete published sequence in the range: melt point, heat to 190F, and pour at 150 to 170F, which is the only place this brand prints all three. Best soy wax for pillar candles sets out what that gap does in practice, and the warning that goes with it: pillar wax contracts away from surfaces, which is exactly the wet-spot problem in a jar.
The size matrix, and the gap in it
Across the range this brand sells 1 lb, 5 lb, 10 lb and 45 lb, but not every grade in every size, and the pattern is the opposite of what you would expect.
| Grade | 1 lb | 5 lb | 10 lb | 45 lb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freedom | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Freedom Coconut | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Freedom Pillar | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Millennium | No | No | No | Yes |
The beginner grade has the highest entry price. You can buy a single pound of the pillar blend or a single pound of the coconut blend and try it, but the plain Freedom soy that everybody is pointed at first starts at 5 lb. If you want a one-pound trial of this brand, the trial sizes exist on the two specialist grades and not on the one you were told to start with.
Buying a case is a separate decision and it is covered properly on buying candle supplies wholesale. The short version: a 45 lb case locks in a recipe, so settle your wick and your fragrance load on a 5 lb bag first.
How it compares with Golden Wax 464
464 is the other default, and the honest comparison is narrower than people make it. Both are container soy blends. Both publish a working sequence. The published melt points are close enough to be the same wax family: 115 to 121F for Freedom against 113 to 118F or 115 to 120F for 464, depending on which supplier you read.
| ASO Freedom | GW 464 | |
|---|---|---|
| Melt point | 115 to 121F | 113 to 118F and 115 to 120F, two suppliers disagree |
| Heat to | 160F | 170 to 180F |
| Max fragrance load | 10 percent | 10 percent |
| Form | Beads | Flakes, usually |
| Wick charts calibrated to it | No | Yes |
The deciding line is the last one, and it is not about quality. Most published wick charts were written against 464, so when a chart says ECO 10 for your diameter it is telling you about 464. That is the real argument for starting on 464 and it is set out in full in our Golden Brands 464 review.
The argument the other way is form and documentation. Beads scoop, weigh and pour out of a bag more cleanly than flakes, and this brand publishes its sequence in one place on the listing instead of across three supplier pages. Neither of those changes how the candle burns.

Top pick · Beads rather than flakes
American Soy Organics Freedom Soy Wax Beads, 10 lbs
American Soy Organics
Beads pour out of the bag cleanly and melt evenly, which is a small quality-of-life difference that you notice on every single batch. Sold specifically for container candles.

What that means
Beads versus flakes is not a performance difference, it is a handling one. Beads scoop and weigh more cleanly and do not compact in the bag.
The listing now publishes the full working sequence: 115 to 121F melt point, heat to 160F, 10 percent maximum load. It did not when we first reviewed it, which is worth knowing if you are comparing against older write-ups that say this wax is undocumented.
Its published melt point sits in the same band as GW 464's 113 to 118F. The practical difference between the two is form and which wax the wick charts assume, not thermal behavior.
Good
- Beads handle better than flakes
- Publishes melt point, heat temperature and maximum fragrance load on the listing
- Container-specific formulation
Less good
- No separately published pour temperature, only a heat-to figure
- Ten pounds is a serious quantity for a beginner
- No 1 lb trial size exists for this grade, unlike the pillar and coconut blends

You are sizing a wick from a published chart for the first time. Those charts were written against GW 464, and on a first batch that is one fewer variable.

Pick 2 · A first serious bag of soy
American Soy Organics Freedom Soy Wax Beads, 5 lbs
American Soy Organics
Five pounds of container soy in bead form. The right size for someone who has done a kit, liked it, and wants to make candles properly without buying a case.

What that means
Five pounds is 80 ounces. In 8-ounce jars at the standard fill, that is about ten candles with wax to spare for the pot.
This is the step up from a kit: you choose your own jars, your own wicks and your own fragrance, and the wax stops being the thing you inherited from a box.
Good
- Sensible first quantity
- Beads pour cleanly
- Container-specific
Less good
- Costs more per pound than the 10 lb bag
- The smallest Freedom bag sold; there is no 1 lb trial size

Pick 3 · Scent throw, once you have the basics down
American Soy Organics Freedom Coconut Soy Wax Beads, 10 lbs
American Soy Organics
Coconut-soy blends are the wax people move to when soy stops throwing scent hard enough for them. They cost more and they are less forgiving about pour temperature, which is why this is a second wax, not a first.

- Coconut soy blend, for container candlesSource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
What that means
The maker publishes 115 to 121F for this blend, which is the same range container soy occupies - GW 464 publishes 113 to 118F. The low-melting wax in this category is pure coconut, at a published 106F, and this is not that.
The maker recommends the CD and ECO wick series, which are the same families the published soy charts cover. You are starting from the same chart rows rather than a different system, but the wax releases fragrance differently, so burn-test rather than carrying a soy size straight over.
Good
- Better fragrance release than straight soy
- Smooth surface finish
- Bead form
Less good
- More expensive than soy
- A blend rather than pure coconut, so the low-melt behavior people expect is muted
- Requires re-testing your wick
Skip this one if
This is your first wax. Coconut blend rewards someone who already knows what a correct melt pool looks like, and punishes someone who does not.

Pick 4 · Finding out whether coconut blend is worth the money to you
American Soy Organics Freedom Coconut Soy Wax Beads, 1 lb
American Soy Organics
The same fully documented wax in the quantity that answers the only question a first-time coconut buyer has, which is whether the scent throw is worth the price step up from soy.

What that means
One pound is about two 8-ounce candles at a 6.4 oz fill, which is exactly enough to burn one and give one away.
Every published figure is identical to the 5 lb bag, so what you learn from this transfers directly when you scale up.
It costs substantially more per pound than the 5 lb bag. That premium is the price of not committing, and it is worth paying once.
Good
- Same published specifications as the larger bags
- Smallest coconut quantity in these picks
- Enough for a real side-by-side test against your usual soy
Less good
- Highest cost per pound of the three sizes
- One pound will not survive a burn test plus a batch
- Same no-published-pour-temperature gap as its siblings
Skip this one if
You already pour coconut blend regularly. This is a sampling quantity and the 5 or 10 lb bags cost far less per candle.

Pick 5 · A pillar wax that publishes every temperature
American Soy Organics Freedom Pillar Soy Wax Beads, 10 lbs
American Soy Organics
Melt point 142 to 146F, pour at 150 to 170F, heat to 190F, 10 percent maximum fragrance load. That is the complete working sequence published on the listing, which is more than almost any wax on this site manages.

What that means
Compare that melt point with container soy. Golden Wax 464 is published at 113 to 118F; this is 142 to 146F, roughly thirty degrees higher. That gap is the whole difference between a wax that holds a shape and one that does not.
The pour window here is 150 to 170F, which is above the melt point rather than close to it. Pour a pillar wax too near its melt point and it starts setting before it has filled the mold.
The listing names CD and ECO as the recommended wick series, which is a useful published starting point rather than the usual silence.
Good
- Publishes melt point, heat, pour and maximum load together
- Names a recommended wick series
- Two 5 lb bags rather than one 10 lb sack, so half stays sealed
Less good
- Wrong wax for jars, where it will pull away from the glass
- Ten pounds is a lot of pillar wax for someone testing the format
Skip this one if
You are making container candles. This is formulated to contract away from surfaces so it releases from a mold, which in a jar is the wet-spot problem on purpose.

Pick 6 · Finding out whether you like molded candles
American Soy Organics Freedom Pillar Soy Wax Beads, 1 lb
American Soy Organics
The same fully documented pillar wax in the smallest quantity anyone sells it in. One pound is two or three small pillars, which is exactly the right size for finding out whether molds are your thing.

What that means
Molded candles are a different craft from jar candles and plenty of people try them once and go back to containers. A pound is the honest way to find that out.
Identical published specifications to the 10 lb bag, so nothing you learn at this size has to be relearned later.
It costs considerably more per pound. That premium is worth paying once.
Good
- Smallest quantity available
- Same published specifications as the large bag
- Low commitment
Less good
- Most expensive way to buy this wax per pound
- One pound goes quickly in a mold

You already know molds are what you want. Buy the 10 lb bag and stop paying the small-quantity premium.

Pick 7 · Buying a case, once you know your recipe
American Soy Organics Millennium Soy Wax Beads, 45 lbs
American Soy Organics
Forty-five pounds is a case, not a bag. It is also the only grade in this brand's range that publishes a 12 percent fragrance ceiling rather than 10, so the highest load the maker will stand behind is locked behind its largest minimum order.

What that means
Forty-five pounds is 720 ounces of wax, or roughly 112 eight-ounce candles. Nobody should buy that before their wick and fragrance load are settled.
The 12 percent ceiling is the reason to choose this grade over Freedom, and it is worth 1.9 oz of fragrance per pound against 1.6. It is a ceiling and not a recommendation: pour to the limit and fragrance weeps out of the wax.
It publishes a heat-to figure of 160F and a pour figure of 115F but no melt point, which is an odd omission on the most expensive wax in the range. You work between two numbers without knowing where the wax actually sets.
Better color retention and less frosting are the two things that matter when candles are going to be seen rather than just burned.
Good
- Lowest cost per pound available
- The only grade in the range with a published 12 percent fragrance ceiling
- Formulated for color retention and reduced frosting
Less good
- 45 lb is a serious commitment of money and storage
- No published melt point, alone in the range
- Sold in no smaller size, so the higher ceiling cannot be tested before committing to a case
Skip this one if
You have not settled your wick size and fragrance load yet. A case of wax locks in a recipe you have not finished writing.

Pick 8 · Candles that stand up without a jar
American Soy Organics Freedom Pillar Soy Wax Beads, 5 lbs
American Soy Organics
Pillar wax is a genuinely different formulation, harder and higher-melting, because nothing is holding the sides in. Using container soy in a mold is the most common reason a molded candle slumps.

- Pillar soySource: Amazon product listing, read 2026-09-02
What that means
Pillar and container are not interchangeable. A container wax in a mold will not release cleanly and will bow in a warm room; a pillar wax in a jar will pull away from the glass and look terrible.
If you bought a kit with molds and it did not say which wax was included, this is the wax those molds actually wanted.
Good
- Correct formulation for molds
- Releases from molds cleanly
- Harder set
Less good
- Wrong wax for jars
- Higher pour temperature than container soy

You are making jar candles. This is the wrong wax and it will pull away from the glass.

Pick 9 · Case quantity of a wax that publishes its numbers
American Soy Organics Freedom Soy Wax Beads, 45 lbs
American Soy Organics
The same Freedom blend our container wax pages recommend, in case quantity, with a published melt point of 115 to 121F and a 10 percent maximum fragrance load. Buying in bulk should not mean losing the specification sheet.

What that means
115 to 121F is within a couple of degrees of the 113 to 118F and 115 to 120F published for Golden Wax 464. Two container soys from different makers landing in the same band is a useful sanity check on both.
Forty-five pounds is about 112 eight-ounce candles. At that scale the per-pound saving is real, and so is the risk of being stuck with a wax you have not tested.
Buy a 5 lb bag of the same blend first, settle the wick, then buy the case. The specifications are identical so nothing is wasted.
Good
- Publishes melt point and maximum load at case quantity
- Same blend as the smaller bags, so testing transfers
- Lowest cost per pound of the documented soys
Less good
- 45 lb of storage
- Only sensible once a recipe is settled
Skip this one if
You are still testing wicks. Settle the recipe on a 5 lb bag of the identical blend first.
What every grade here has in common
- A 10 percent fragrance ceiling, except Millennium at 12 percent. Our fragrance load page covers what to actually pour.
- A CD or ECO wick recommendation from the maker, on the grades that name one. Sizes are on the wick size chart.
- Bead format, on all four. No chopping, and the bag does not compact.
- Paraffin-free, beeswax-free, no animal products, stated on every listing.
- Microwavable, named as a melting method on every one of the four. That is the maker's own instruction, which matters because it is usually the internet saying it and not the manufacturer. See can you melt candle wax in the microwave.
- Two 5 lb bags inside the 10 lb orders, rather than one 10 lb sack.
Who should not buy this brand
Anyone sizing a wick from a published chart for the first time. The charts assume 464, the difference is small but real, and on your first batch you want one fewer variable. Start on the wax the chart was written for, settle the wick, then switch if beads and a single spec sheet appeal.
And anyone who wants to try a pound of soy before committing. There is no 1 lb Freedom. Buy a pound of a different maker's container soy, or accept the 5 lb bag.

Common questions
Which American Soy Organics wax should I buy?
Freedom, for container candles. It publishes a melt point of 115 to 121F, a heat-to temperature of 160F and a 10 percent maximum fragrance load, and the other three grades are variations on it. Choose Freedom Pillar only for molds, Freedom Coconut for scent throw and finish, and Millennium only if you already know your recipe and want the 12 percent ceiling.
What is the melt point of American Soy Organics Freedom wax?
115 to 121F, published on the listing, with an instruction to heat to 160F before adding fragrance. Freedom Coconut publishes the identical 115 to 121F range. Freedom Pillar is much higher at 142 to 146F, and Millennium publishes no melt point at all.
Is Freedom Coconut a lower-melting wax than Freedom soy?
No. Both publish 115 to 121F, and the coconut listing describes the blend as performing just like Freedom Soy Wax. Pure coconut wax is genuinely low-melting, but a coconut soy blend is not. The coconut buys fragrance release and surface finish, not a softer wax.
What is the difference between Freedom and Millennium?
Millennium is a soy and botanical wax blend formulated for color retention and reduced frosting, with a 12 percent maximum fragrance load against Freedom's 10 percent. It publishes no melt point, and it is sold only as a 45 lb case, so there is no small bag to test it with.
How much fragrance oil can I add to American Soy Organics wax?
Ten percent by weight, which the listings state as 1.6 oz per pound, on Freedom, Freedom Coconut and Freedom Pillar. Millennium publishes 12 percent, about 1.9 oz per pound. Those are ceilings rather than recommendations, and most candles are poured well under them.
Is American Soy Organics better than Golden Wax 464?
Neither is better as a wax, and their published melt points are close enough to be the same family. 464's real advantage is that most published wick charts were written against it, so a chart recommendation behaves as predicted. This brand's advantages are bead format and a complete sequence printed on one listing.
Can I melt American Soy Organics wax in the microwave?
The maker names the microwave as a melting method on all four grades, alongside a double boiler and a wax melter. That is the manufacturer saying it rather than a blog, which is unusual in this category.
Can I buy a 1 lb bag of Freedom soy wax to try it?
